Chapter 21 : Sing me Blues

The floor was cool and provided a little degree of comfort after practicing of two hours straight. It had taken us a lot of time to select the song we were going to play as cover, each of us had their own opinions and at some point we were fighting (especially Lars and Rhodes) but in the end Stella declared we will go by her choice. She sounded too ferocious about it that we gave up. She was bossy, after all and meaningless fights were wasting of time. I sighed and leaned back on the wall with a dreamy look on my face, trying as hard as I could to ignore Rhodes complains.

He wasn’t saying anything about the song selection – he had already accepted Stella’s terms. I had filled in him with my date with Oliver. Well it wasn’t exactly a date, more like a meeting.

No no rewind that.

Meeting sounded too formal. I mean he had asked me out in very casual manner but there wasn’t anything remotely romantic about it. I recalled his words, he had asked me if I was free, and too shocked to answer, I had responded with a nod. His next statement had sent me in a whirlpool of fantasies.

‘’Okay then, meet me by that lakeside tomorrow night, I am not driving all the way here.’’ It was his typical way of asking me out, and surprising at the same time.

Rhodes, who up until now didn’t give me any string reaction on this matter, seemed to take this quite seriously. I knew he was being concern about me, we were best friends after all, and my history with Oliver was not so great, but this time I wanted to do this without anyone being a worrywart.

‘’This is not some twisted fairy tale Quinn or those lame TV soaps you watch. If he is taking a step ahead – not to mention this fast – then I am sorry but I can’t eblive this guy.’’

‘’Last time I checked, he asked me to go out, not you.’’ I responded with my eyes shut close, ‘’and what will he do uh? He is not some secret assassin sent to terminate innocent little girls.’’

‘’You’re blowing it off as a joke.’’ I heard him say sternly,

‘’I am not joking, I am being persuasive.’’

‘’And you suck at it.’’ He muttered, oblivious that I didn’t want to have this conversation.

I opened my eyes and tilted myself towards him a little, ‘’It’s not like, he gonna take me to some deserted grave yard and sink fangs in my neck.’’

‘’Be a little serious.’’

‘’But I am!’’ I cried peeking an eye on others who thankfully were not listening or looking, ‘’we are just going out. It’s not even a date, then what had gotten in your head.’’

‘’I cannot trust them, you know very well what that bimbo bitch did, no matter what you do or want kind of relation develops between you guys. We are rivals. RIVALS. And they are as desperate to win as we are. Try to understand.’’

His worry was right, I admit it but he accusing Oliver was wrong. Oliver had stated quite clearly he wanted to know more about me. And I was sure that wherever we would go tomorrow, he won’t bring up this competition between us.

‘’I get it you don’t trust him, but trust me at least.’’

‘’I do trust you but-‘’

‘’I promise you, I wont tell him anything about our plans. There won’t be any talk about this competition. Believe in my words.’’ My tone was almost pleading now, he just closed his mouth and his lips were set in a thin line, he was looking anywhere but at me.
