Chapter Twenty One

Bad Reputation.

Leila winced. Wade was next to her, helping her with the gray immobilizer. The race was the day after tomorrow. She had to be able to run. Wade was being as careful as he could with those gigantic hands of his. Leila bit her lip to evade crying out in pain. Wade had touched a tender spot in her ankle where it was still swolen.

"Wade," Leila squealed. Wade looked up at her. They were sitting in her bed, her foot propped up in a chair. "Be careful." She said for the hundreth time. Wade sighed. "Sorry, Lei. I have to remove the bandages too. Your foot looks like a pineapple." Wade murmured. Leila groaned. "It does not." She said, and stood up.

At first, she felt pain. So much pain. She winced and moaned. Wade rushed towards her, but she placed a hand to stop him. She leaned weight equally on both legs. It took a good five minutes before the pain ebbed away. Her foot was swollen, but with ice it would be better.

Wade practically read her mind, and soon enough he had a bucket of water with ice. Leila dunked her foot in, the water freezing her foot. But she held the pain.

She dried her foot with a towel and stood up again. This time she took a few steps. Her ankle felt bad, it really did. But she had to make it all better by saturday, or else she would not be able to run. She would not get a chance at a scholarship. She would be crushed.

She was doing this mostly to prove Brittany wrong. How could she get back at her for this? This was something bad. Really bad. Leila had to hit her back really hard so she would never hit her again. Leila sighed as she walked a bit faster. Her foot fell almost normal now. Almost.

Leila sat down in her bed and Wade sat down next to her, holding her hand. Leila sighed. "What if I can't run?" Leila asked. Wade shook his head. "What is wrong with you? Please. You can do anything. You are Leila Fucking Hampshire. Please. You're like... Wonder Woman." Wade said. She laughed and slapped his shoulder.

      "Come on. Let's try again."

Leila was in her running shorts and shirt, she and Wade had managed to fit her foot into sneakers. She had gone out for a jog yesterday, but could she run? Leila shivered in the sun light. She spotted Wade and the guys and the bleachers. She loved the guys for coming.

Scarlett was there too, sitting in the far corner. Leila smiled at her, but she just turned her head. Brett walked besides Leila. He stretched his back and arms, pulling them backwards. "How's the leg, Lei?" He asked.

"Ankle," Leila corrected absentmindedly, looking at the runners from the other teams. "And its fine, thanks." Leila said, fighting the urge to hug him.

"Lei?" Brett whispered. "Yeah?" "We need to talk to you after the meet." He said, and with that said he left. Leila wondered if she should talk to them.

      She decided that she would.

The runner in the other team was fast. Really fast. Leila had watched her run the hundred meters in 12.59 last year, where Leila had gone second. That was two seconds more than the fastest woman runner in the world. This chick was fast.
