Prologue | Strong Ties

Absence in love is like water upon fire;
a little quickens, but much extinguishes it.
- Hannah More

June 30th: 1 Year Ago

I look up at Amaya, who has knelt beside me and placed her hand on my shoulder. I have never felt so distant from her in my life and being honest, it scares me. She's going to be so far away, in another world. I probably won't see her until we are much older, will we be just as close then as we see now?

"Will you be there for me?" I finally say, my voice sounds so different I could hardly believe that I am speaking. It sounds so quiet, like it going to disappear, but I know that Amaya heard me.

"Forever and ever Alice, until the day we die. Nothing can keep us apart for long, not even Dorian."

She holds her hand out to me and I take her hand as she pulls me up. A strange feeling, almost like power is felt between us when we held hands. Fire and water, that's what it feels like, but I don't have control over fire. The look on Amaya's face tells me that she felt it as well.

"Fire and water...Is that our destiny?"

"I think so, we balance each other"
