Chapter 21

"I'm telling you, we put the piece in wrong," I said. "It goes right there." I pointed to the opposite side of the 3D diagram Mae and I were making for our biology class, and let me just say that it was tough.

"Ryder, it goes here," Mae said. "I've checked it a hundred times."

"Then check again," I said. "Because it goes right here."

       "No, it doesn't!" Mae said.

"Yes, it does!" I said. "I think I would know."

"Right, because I forgot that you're better than everyone," Mae said.

       "What? I never said that."

       "You didn't have to."

Tony walked over to us. "Okay, you two have been arguing for the past five minutes. I was going to let it slide, but it's distracting everyone else. So figure it out quietly."

"It's kind of hard to figure it out when my boyfriend is being very stubborn," Mae said.

"I'm not stubborn," I said. "I'm trying to tell you where the piece goes, but you're not listening."

"Because I put it in the right place!" Mae said.

"No, you didn't!" I said. "Uncle Tony, that piece goes here right?" I pointed to the place where it should be.

"Actually, no," Tony said. "It's in the right spot."

"I told you," Mae said. "But, let me guess, you're not going to apologize because you think you're better than everyone else."

       "I never said I was!" I said.

"Yeah? What about yesterday?" Mae asked.

"I was talking about dance," I said.

"Oh, so you think you're a better dancer than everyone?"

"I'm not thinking it. I'm saying it."

"You know what?" Tony interrupted. "Mae, finish the diagram by yourself. Ryder, start working on the questions for the diagram and you're sitting at the desk beside me. Everyone else is trying to concentrate, but they can't because of your constant bickering."

"How come I have to move?" I asked. "My ankle hurts. Mae should move."

"Boo hoo," Tony said. "You're moving because you're being arrogant."

       "I'm not arrogant!"

"Yeah, and I'm not a dancer," Mae said sarcastically.

I just glared at her before I got up from my spot and went to the front of the class in the extra desk beside Tony's, which was quite challenging seeing as I had to maneuver my way through the classes with my crutches.

I sat down at the desk and Tony brought over my supplies. I noticed people staring at me, mainly because the seat I was in was for people who weren't doing their work properly or were being too disruptive.

Tony sat down at his desk and turned his chair to face me. "So. What's up?" he asked.

       "Go away."

"Sorry, dear nephew, but I can't leave because this is my classroom," Tony said. "Seriously, though, you're acting worse than your father when he was your age."
