I looked outside to see heavy rain falling. It had been raining for a few solid hours now, the constant sounds keeping me company.
I had a sudden urge to open my window and lean out to feel the rain drops on my face.
I slowly opened the window, trying to make as little noise as possible as everyone in my house was asleep. The moment I had let the window slide up the smallest space, the sound of the gentle storm seem to erupt into my room. I let out a gentle sigh of relief before resting my head on the tiny windowsill in front of me.
The rain seemed to take over every aspect of life and change it, no matter if it was good or bad it was almost always different. It's like if you left a piece of paper covered in drawing out in the rain, the ink would run creating an entirely new piece of art. Sometimes it left behind a stunning piece with colors filling the page whereas other times it created on big mess. Once or twice it would let the paper be left free of any damage.
I smiled and let out a small laugh at myself. What on earth was I on about.
I reached my hand out, letting the rain drops fall softly on my hand. Again, I closed my eyes, letting all my other senses take control. The smell of rain filled my nose as I inhaled deeply.
Slowly I opened my eyes again. My eyes wondered over my own back garden and the surrounding gardens filled with various trees, plants and sheds. I was pretty sure one tree had a small tree-house a few door down. I slowly raised my gaze to the street behind my own. Living in the outskirts city center meant all the houses were packed pretty close together.
The rain became lighter again, letting me see across the backstreets even clearer.
My eyes scanned the houses surrounding my own seeing no lights on in anyone's house. The whole world seemed to be sleeping. I checked my phone to see if anyone had replied to my messages. Even my friends, who always seemed to stay up almost until the crack of dawn, were asleep. I let out a small smile at that idea because I was concerned for their health. They always seemed to be tired and would go out drinking at the weekends. I joined them sometimes but never really got drunk, I was more there to protect them from those who wonder the streets in the early hours of the morning.
I looked back up out of the partially opened window to find a figure staring at me from the house opposite my own. My mouth parted in shock. My eyes adjusted to the light to see it was a boy, around my age, staring straight back at me. I raised my hand and signaled a small wave to him. He didn't seem to move. It was dark so maybe he hadn't seen the wave. Maybe he hadn't even seen me.
I shifted my body to make it comfier for me to look out of the window, never losing eye contact with the figure.
He moved and returned my small wave. My face spread into a grin. I had questions for him like who was he? Why was he up at this late hour staring at the rain? Although the same could be asked for me.
In my temporary loss of any form of concentration the boy had disappeared. My face fell slightly at the loss of company although I had never really had in the first place.
I turned back to my phone with no responses still. My eyes flicked back up out of the window as i saw movement. The boy had returned with a piece of paper and his phone. His shone the flashlight from his phone onto a piece of paper which seemed to have a collection of scribbles on it. I squinted for a bit before noticing it was his phone number. I grabbed my phone, carefully trying to figure out which numbers he had written down. It was obvious he had tried to write it as big and as clear as possible however he was a far distance away meaning it was difficult for me to decipher each number.
After a few minutes I had managed to type the number into my phone. I made sure to save it before opening up a new message. I typed "Hey?" into the phone. The question mark was there because i wasn't sure if I had the correct number.
As I was about to press send I realized how weird this was. A random boy I had never seen before had just given me his number from his window at 3 am and I was going to text him? I glanced back up at the boy who seemed to have a hopeful smile on his face.
I quickly tapped the send button. What was the worst that could happen?
