There would have been a time for you to leave;
it may have been I sped you on your way:
the lessons to be learned are how to grieve,
and how to blend a fantasy with day.

It's clearer now that some things cannot change;
defences flooded without tragedy.
At lowest ebb is needed empathy,
when dark, unwilling our denials range.

It's not enough to agree to differ:
there must be dances of our difference.
It's not too wise to vacillate or dither,
but play that music of our diverse sense.

And only when these lessons learned shall be,
can ever you be sweet-detained by me.
