Here Comes the Bride...

"Here, use this so you don't get crumbs on your dress." I smiled handing it to her.

"Oh thanks JJ. I was starving and couldn't wait until the reception to get some food. Plus, the little one wouldn't be very happy with me if I waited that long." She rested her hand on her little bump that was clearly visible in her dress.

"Hey, Jake called. Are you okay if I go call him. I'll just be ten, maybe twenty minutes tops?"

She wiped herself after eating the last piece. "Absolutely love. Let me know how he's doing. I'm really worried about him."

I grabbed my phone and rushed out of the room. "Thanks, A."

I hurried down the hall and found a couch to sit on. Dialing his number, the phone only rang three times before Jake picked up.

"Hey beautiful. Miss me yet?"

I couldn't help but laugh and felt myself choke up. "You never leave my thoughts you jerk! Saying I miss you is an understatement."

He chuckled, "Well I sure wish I was there with you. How is my bro?" I figured he was talking about Tom.

"He's good. He misses you too. I feel bad, because he can tell I'd really wish you were here."

"I wish I was the one escorting you this weekend." He let out a breath and then a few coughs.

"Jake, babe, are you okay?"

He was still coughing a bit, and I could hear one of his nurses in the background. After what felt like eternity, but was probably just a minute or so, Jake came back to the phone.

"Yeah, I'm sorry. Don't worry. I'll be fine."

"I'm coming home this weekend. I can't take this anymore."

"Jay, you can't do that." He was still coughing little coughs here and there.

"I can't even focus on working knowing you're at home like this." I blew my nose and he then knew I was crying.

"Jay, babe, you can't cry right now." He coughed again and I wondered if he was ever going to get better.

"How am I supposed to help this? The man I love is in the hospital right now."

I could tell through the phone he was smiling. "You know I love you so much."

I couldn't help but laugh as I wiped a tear rushing down my cheek. "Yeah, I do."

"Please, just be there for Ariel today."

"I promise I will." I sniffed again, "I don't have to be to work until next Tuesday. I'll fly home tonight after the wedding and we'll spend the weekend together."

"That would be amazing." He said.

"Okay, I've got to go help Ariel and the girls get ready. I'll see you late tonight."

"Okay, I love you." He paused and then said, "More than anything else."

I couldn't take it. It was too much for me. What the hell was I doing here in Vancouver. I should be there with him. I should be in his room with him comforting him through this. He needed all the support he could get. He had to juggle his school work in the hospital through treatments. He needed me.

"I love you too." I was overwhelmed with tears at this point and knew I'd have to fix my make up. "I'll call you when I'm on my way home, okay?"

"Alright beautiful. I'll see you soon."

"See you soon."

****************

We were all lined up outside the chapel. Ariel had helped me fix my make up and we were ready to begin the ceremony.
