*JAKE*

It’s not one of my proudest achievements. To say that I was able to break a promise I made to someone, especially if I was the only one who she deemed as her last hope.

I suppose wala akong karapatang mag expect sa kaniya ng kahit ano. I made a promise and I didn’t exactly keep it.

Naalala ko pa nung time na nangako ako sa kaniya.

She was crying back then. She was four, I was five. We got lost sa loob ng orchard nila. Nawili kaming dalawa sa paglalaro and the next thing we knew, we were lost, unable to see the path we usually took home.

It was actually the first time I saw her like that despite us knowing each other for a year. She wasn’t usually the one to cry, but she was that time, hunched over herself at the tree, hugging her knees, shaking over in mixture of fear and cold.

She looked so little then…So weak.

So vulnerable.

“Ang dilim na o. Baka hinahanap na tayo nila Mama.” Sabi niya, sitting down the base of a tree and then leaning against the tree trunk. “Nasan na ba tayo, Jake?”

Nakatayo ako noon. Madilim na ang paligid at naaaninag nalang naming ang isa’t isa ng kaunti. The moon above shone made it possible for us to see each other.

Tinignan ko yung paligid. “Hindi ko alam, Eya. Pero sigurado hinahanap na nga tayo.” Sabi ko saka umupo sa tabi niya.

“I don’t like this.” Sabi niya. “I don’t like this at all.” She says, hugging her knees.

“Wag kang mag alala, makakalabas din tayo dito.”

She doesn’t say anything. Basta nakapatong lang yung mukha niya sa may tuhod niya. Panigurado naman na hahanapin kaming dalawa. Knowing that Thea’s here assured me of that.

“Anong oras na kaya?” tanong ko sa wala. “Nawawala na tayo.”
“Malamang.”
“Pero alam mo ba, na itong part ng orchard daw may mumu.”
She looks at me. “Those are ghost stories.” Sabi niya. “I don’t scare that easily.”

Naramdaman kong nanginginig siya and I got colder myself. Gabi na nga at marami pang puno. It was early summer but the breeze was always cool sa orchard nila.

“Halika dito.” Sabi ko sa kanya and I hugged her.
“I really don’t like this.” Sabi niya sa akin. “Sobrang dilim, tapos malamig pa. Hindi ba nila tayo hinahanap? Wala akong masyadong makita.”
