"Game's up, beautiful," he crooned from the doorway, the glint of metal exposing a six-inch hunting knife in his fist. "You've nowhere to hide."

Searching blindly, my hands groped beneath the bed while my eyes stayed trained on the intruder. As he advanced into the room, my breathing hitched to quick, panicked gasps. Tremors wracked my frame until my hands finally wrapped around what I sought.

"Am I going to have to come get you?"

A guttural scream tore from my throat as I swung the shotgun up and pulled the trigger.

Thunder exploded in my ears, but the lightning struck him.
