Kathryn came to an abrupt halt, seeing Jamie and Tristan holding onto each other like human existence depended upon it.
Tristan noticed her first. His hand froze on Jamie's back, and Jamie felt him stiffen. He pulled away.
"I thought you wanted to be alone," she said, her eyes like shards of ice.
"I-" Jamie began. Shut his mouth. Opened it again. Closed it.
Tell her, Tristan silently begged. Don't leave me again.
Jamie went to Kathryn. Tristan watched, hurt and incredulous.
"Sorry," he said.
She grabbed his arm. "You're keeping everyone waiting. Let's go."
"Jamie!" Tristan exclaimed. "You're just- you can't just leave! You can't keep pretending, damn it."
"Let's go," Kathryn said stonily.
Jamie looked at her, then at Tristan. His eyes were soul-less.
He left with Kathryn, and took Tristan's hope too as a souvenir.
