"We got out on the Cliff last time," Thomas said. "Maybe we should try there first."
"WICKED isn't stupid. They most likely changed that." Newt said.
"Thomas?" You asked.
"Yeah?" Thomas turned to you.
"How long exactly did it take to construct the Maze?"
"I think around like three years."
"And we just got here about a week ago." Minho said.
"I was here for two weeks before you guys got here." You said.
"You what?" Alby asked. "I didn't think girls could last that long here."
"I think. . ." Your voice trailed off.
"You think what?" Alby asked. "We could use whatever you got."
Everyone was looking at you.
"I. . . Um. . ." You could feel the pressure they were putting on you. They wanted out of here just as much as you do. It brings back some bad memory - dream things. "You all have been here before, right?"
"What does that have to do with anything?" Newt asked.
"I Have been having these memory - dream things. I write them down so I don't forget them. I thought they might help later but there was this one. . ." You looked at Chuck, he seemed to know exactly what you were about to say. "Before Winston came up, remember how I said I was going to check on Chuck?" They all nodded. "Well, Chuck told me he had a dream about me being here. No one else. By myself. I had the dream myself. He said I looked like I was losing my mind. I kept yelling for something to get out of my head. I remember having voices in my head talking to me. It drove me over the edge. Literally. Chuck said he saw me jump off the Cliff."
"Then how are you here?" Alby asked.
"How are you?" You asked him. "And everybody else that has died that is here right now. How are they here?"
"She's got a point." Thomas said.
"What point?" Minho asked. He looked completely lost.
"I think there bringing the people that had the most effect on the Maze back to this hell."
"So?"
"I'm saying their retrying the Maze. See which ones work best, who can pass them. They tried one Maze-"
"But there were two Maze's." Thomas cut you off.
"Were the girls and guys separate, or was there a mixture of both girls and boys."
"They were separate." Newt answered.
"Then they were trying to see if girls or guys did better at that one Maze." You guessed.
"So who won?" Minho asked.
"Does that really matter right now?" You asked.
"To me it does."
"Anyway, as to why, I don't know. I don't even know how I knew that."
"Bloody hell. So they were trying to test our brain functions. . ." Newt said but didn't finish.
"And comparing it to the girls. Yes."
"Did you work for them?" Thomas asked.
"Maybe. I had this dream where I was chasing a lady down a row of bottles filled with blue liquid. I kept saying something about my grandmother and how she was just like her. Killing people for no reason. If a whole generation that was immune to the disease came along, what is the point of making a cure if everyone will be immune one day?"
"Good question. But what about the people that aren't immune?" Newt asked.
"You aren't are you?" You asked.
"No."
"I think I remember them putting something in the none Immunes to make them immune. But there were only a handful of us that aren't. They only put it in some of them. They said something about it leaving a scar. . ." You looked at Newt. You grabbed his arm and rested it on the table.
"What are you doing?" Newt asked.
"Looking for a scar. They said it would be on the hand." You didn't see a scar on the backside of his hand or wrist so you flipped his arm over. There was a circle shaped scar in the middle of his palm. "Oh, thank God."
"What?" Thomas, Minho, and Chuck said at the same time looking over at Newt's hand.
"Scar. Which means he's not going to catch the Flare." You answered. You felt happy and worried at the same time. You had no idea why, but you let the happy side show.
"Great. That was horrible." Newt said.
"Wait. . . If you're here, that means you weren't killed by the Flare. You would be in an mental hospital. Then how were you killed?" Minho asked.
Tension filled the air. Thomas looked over at Newt. He looked guilty and mortified.
"Um. . ." Thomas looked down and twirled his thumbs.
Newt started chewing on his finger nails.
"Well?" Minho asked. "Does any body know?"
"I do." Thomas said.
I swore not to tell him. Thomas called to you in his mind.
How did he die? You asked.
He told me to. . . he made me. He didn't want to die because of the being a Crank. He told me to. He made me shoot him. In the head.
You didn't know what to say. Your mouth dropped open and you stared at Thomas for a moment.
"Is anybody going to tell me?" Minho asked.
"I shot him." Thomas said in a barely audible voice.
