INTRODUCTIONS
James Rivers, it’s just a name I made up for myself, after all I never knew who my parents were. Richard Millers, an old professor of fine arts entered me to college free of charge. He taught me everything about art and told me I have potential. Being the man I am I took advantage of that. Soon during my early twenties, he died but...I never really did care.
Right after his death, I continued my own rise to fame. 'I am better than Millers' that’s what I’ve always told to myself. I can surpass him, one way or another and just like magic this dream of mine turned into reality.
I’ve been living with fame and fortune for the past few years but to tell you the truth I have never been with anyone before. I’ll just have to put up a good face in front of the crowd and remain like that until I die. But then, it wasn’t like I expected. Seems like lady luck doesn't like the man I have become.
Next thing I knew, I was in the hospital. I lost an arm and the other paralyzed. Since the news of my accident reached the mass, all the years I've worked for has come to nothing. But it seems that it's not that bad at all...
....because it is the reason I met my very first friend.
It's the day before Christmas Eve and I was at my usual park bench. A little boy sat beside me and asked my name. I didn't pay him any attention and moved to another bench. Still, he followed me and asked my name once again. I reached for the third bench and he did the same. I was so mad and irritated that I screamed my name. And this is how our long conversation started.
"Wow...nice name, me? I'm Cedric, Cedi for short"
"I never asked kid. Go away"
“I live at the park bench nearby the cotton candy booth, if you want someone to talk to just give me a holler-“
"Hey! Stop blabbering around. Go away!"
"Why?"
"You're irritating"
"Why?"
"Because you keep on talking so shut up!"
"Why?"
"What part of GO AWAY can't you understand kid? Stop asking why!" he went silent which was a relief. He moved closer to me and stared. I didn’t pay attention to him at first but it started to get really...awkward, “What do you want now?”
"Why are you here?"
"I lost my career and was thrown out. Surely you know who I am"
"No"
"What? You don't know me! What kind of forest have you been in your whole life?"
"The same forest you're living in right now" I was shocked. He was so straightforward. I opened my mouth and tried to say something but I can't.
"What was your job?" I tried to ignore him but he started to pull my sleeve...again and again and again...
"I'm an artist for goodness sake!"
"Wow! Can you draw a bunny?" I looked at him like he was crazy
"Okay kid, is it me or...are you just darn blind! Can't you see that I'm missing a hand and the other's paralyzed? Just let someone else draw your stupid bunny for you" I was about to leave when I felt a tug on my sleeve. I looked back and he was crying; “Now you’re the one who felt like crying! Really! I get to be the bad guy!”
"I'm sorry....I thought you're using the other one. I never knew it's paralyzed" He sat back and dried his eyes. I felt sorry but I can’t say it out loud.
"You know, I want to be a writer ever since I'm old enough to think...I've always been here in this park an-"
"Wait? How did you manage to live?"
"I have a friend, his name's Walter, he works as a mechanic. He always gives me something to eat" I began to wonder. Are there really people like that. You just give off food even if you're already so poor just to help a friend?
"Okay let me continue...I've heard many stories from other people in this park which I think, deserves to be in a book but the problem is...I don't know how to read nor write"
"Then why won't you ask Walter or anyone..."
"Walter doesn't know how to do them either and I just can't ask anyone. I want it to be special. I want to learn it from someone close" I looked at him sincerely and told him something I wouldn't have expected.
"If I t-teach you how when my hand is all better? I mean when it gets healed will you leave me alone?"
"Really! You'd do that for me?" I nodded and he hugged me tightly before jumping for joy
The events that happened before I met him may not have been just an accident. I looked at him. That was my first time to experience a hug. Never was it with someone, even with Millers. But...it was with someone I just met that day. I felt happiness for the first time in my life as well as responsibility as I oath to myself that I will never break that promise
