“Yeah. I probably have mine somewhere…can I copy yours if I don’t find mine?” Jen asked. I couldn’t believe they still thought about those pictures too…
“Of course, mine’s taped to my dresser.” Marina replied, and then I heard click of a stereo and on came the radio, drowning out a lot of noise.
Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’ seeped out of their room.
They still kept them? I thought they might have chucked them away…
I silently thanked the heavens – it would be a lot easier to get passed the window now.
Less chance they would hear the tree branch creaking over the radio.
I peeped from behind the tree, seeing Jen laying on the bed holding what I assumed was the photo, smiling at it nostalgically and Marina was standing with her back to me, looking through her walk in closet.
I felt a pang in my chest. I would have usually been sitting beside Jen, laughing at how stupid we looked back then.
Instead, I was couched in their tree like a burglar.
I sighed. It’s now or never… if neither of them is looking out the window, they won’t see me… you need to make your move now Marli…
I slowly moved round the tree so I was facing the window, holding my breath.
If the looked out the window and to their left they would see me in the tree, while keeping my eye on them I slowly made my way across the branch that led me to Trey’s terrace.
The bark felt rough against my feet and I could see the green grass below. At least I knew that if I fell I would probably land on my feet – Wolf reflexes.
I slowly walked three steps along, my arms slightly to my side to keep the balance, as I glanced towards Marina’s vacant window in relief and tried to judge how far I’d have to jump to get over the low black metal terrace railings. My guess was I would have to leap forwards, feet first and land on the wooden decking of the floor.
I moved my feet along two more steps when I heard Jenny’s soft voice, distantly over the music, still distinguishable with my wolf hearing “ Do you think we’ll ever take any photo’s like that again? The three of us, I mean?” I internally cringed, feeling a pang in my chest as I heard the quiver of emotion in her voice.
I stopped, every muscle suspended, as I stood balanced on the branch, straining to hear Marina’s reply.
Marli you actually need to move it. You cannot get caught…
“ If she forgives us, maybe we”- I heard Marina say before the branch I was standing on creaked, groaning tiredly from supporting my weight.
Eeeerghhhh… it echoed loudly in my ears, as I knew it would for them.
Shit. I quickly took the last step, springing into the air across the gap, my feet forwards as I landed with a soft, dull thud on the wooden terrace floor, rolling on the floor until I was on my knees, my back flattened against the wall.
