I crouched down in the belly of the tree, watching the windows, trying to ignore the rough bark of the tree scratching my bare legs.
It looked all clear…. All I had to do was get across the branch and It would be a clear jump.
Then Marina’s room light flicked on, like a warning beacon in my mind.
Crap, Crap, Crap. Doing acrobatics with an audience wasn’t what I had planned.
I made my whole body flatten against the back of the body of the tree, my feet balancing precariously on two branches that faced towards the garden, so I couldn’t be seen from the house. Hopefully. The view of the garden was really great from up here; shame about the lack of safety the slender branches I was standing on gave me.
I winced as I heard her window open, and Marina’s clear voice, “ Yeah, sure you can borrow my blue top. It suits you better than it does me Jen” I heard ring out from inside.
Oh lord this would make it incredibly hard to sneak past… I would have to be really quiet. Wolf hearing was crazily sharp. Especially on the night of a full moon like tonight.
I kept completely still, listening for signs that they were distracted.
Then I’d make my move.
“ Thanks. Hey- do you think that Marli still has those photo’s of us in her room?” I heard Jen ask. It sounded like she was further into the room than Marina.
“ Maybe. I wouldn’t be surprised if she burnt them after how we acted.” Her voice became slightly muted and I knew she was walking further into the room.
“ I hope not. I really like that picture were we are all eating ice cream when were seven and we all have chocolate sauce on our faces as we smile at the camera. I love that picture. I never had my own copy.”
“Yeah, I prefer the picture of us before we all went to that Halloween party freshman year. When we all dressed up like witches and took brooms from our houses, trying to be the three witches of east wick. But remember- we also thought it would be cool to be vampires so we got those fake fangs and put blood all over ourselves?” she laughed, making me suppress a giggle at the memory of us three.
“ Do you remember how sticky it was?”
I could hear Jen laughing too, now “ Yeah, and it stank! It took us all a week to get the smell off us properly.”
I couldn’t help but smile remembering too, the fake blood really did stink. We smelt like those yellow Cod- liver oil Tablets and vinegar.
We thought it was so cool.
“ It’s on my wall. Reminds me never to buy that fake blood crap ever again.” she said in-between laughter.
“ Did she have that photo?” Jen asked.
I heard Marina pause “ I think we all made copies of the Halloween photos?”
I knew we did. I had all the pictures. Most of the ones I hadn’t framed on my walls, I put them away in a box after we stopped talking.
