CHAPTER ELEVEN:

Incompatibility is a Lie

Like Claire, I never approved of William’s lifestyle, but early on, in one of our first ever serious conversations, Jace and I had decided that that would be an off-limits topic.  Will and Jace were very close, had a friendship that was complicated and deep in ways I would never fully understand.  That meant that William was what could be called an Untouchable, meaning, no matter what he did, Jace would always see him in a biased light, would defend his ‘brother’s’ actions no matter what they were.  I recognized that.  So, basically,

I kept my mouth shut and was friendly.

As for Roza, I only met her once or twice before she latched to William. Unlike Claire, I knew the moment I saw Roza.  I might not have known the details, but I could see Roza’s past shining through her eyes.  Immediately, I had pulled the girl into a stiff hug, but had said nothing more.  In fact, when Roza was brought up several months later, I was only vaguely aware of what Claire was talking about.  All that processed with me was that my best friend was not coming home anymore.  And I about had a panic attack.

About a week before Roza and William officially met, Claire got the call that would continue her dancing career and kick start her modeling one.  A long term contract for a job at Silken Sorbet. She was scheduled to leave a few days before the band’s upcoming stadium tour.

In the beginning, Claire planned on taking Roza with her, had suggested it several times already.  And Roza had, apparently, shown a rarely seen spark at the idea of England.  But William wasn’t going and by the time the trip became serious Roza was so completely dependent on him that removing him from her life was out of the question.  So Claire called me to tell me that the job, and trip, was being canceled.

That didn’t go over well. At all.

But, to be fair, I had good reason for my hysterics.

“Emily, you’re being completely unreasonable,” I replied, slightly incredulous at my friend’s unwillingness to understand, along with the enormity of her response.

“Claire, you don’t understand! You have to come!  I need you!”

“Stop being dramatic,” this almost sent Emily over the edge.

“I’m not being dramatic!!!” Emily barely paused to take a breath, “You don’t get it.  You have to come,” she repeated, “I need you.”

“You were here barely a month ago, Emily.  What could have possibly changed?” I was calm as ever, but that just seemed to irritate Emily all the more.

“Jace proposed!”

“Emily, Jace proposes practically every day,” I replied, brushing it off, “Again, what could possibly have chan-” my eyes widened as I gripped the Iphone ever tighter to my ear, “You didn’t.”

An awkward silence came from the other end.

“Emily Jean Thompson.”

ItwaslateandhegotmedrunkandIwastrashedand-” Emily tried to spit out the words as quickly as possible, but I was expert at understanding her nervous gibberish.  I was out of my chair and dancing around the living room in seconds, ignoring the wide-eyed, amused stare from Will, but inwardly pleased at the small smile I had elicited from the girl under his arm.
