“One moment please,” Jesse said as he and Chance pulled me aside.

“I know what I’m talking about,” I told them, crossing my arms.”

One of them sighed. “Normally yes,” Jesse started, “but this time you have to be wrong, vampires can’t be born. It’s impossible.”

I just smiled and shook my head. “No it’s not.”

“No offence, but I think we know more about vampires than you.” The slightly frustrated tone told me it was Chance speaking.

“In my vision her eyes were glowing like other vampires’ do, but hers were purple not red. Do either of you know any vamps with that eye color?” I waited for a moment and when there was no reply I continued. “Yeah, I didn’t think so.

“At first I thought it was a fluke or something. Maybe I wasn’t seeing it right or maybe some vampires had different glowing eye colors, but now it makes sense. Her eyes are different because she’s different, she’s born this way.”

They were quiet again then Chance finally spoke up. “It would explain what’s so special about her, why the others want her.”

“Maybe,” Jesse sighed. “It’s a stretch though. If born vampires exist, why haven’t we heard of them before?”

“Maybe they like to stay to themselves, stay a secret,” I suggested. “Or maybe there just aren’t that many of them left.”

“It’s possible,” Chance said, though his tone suggested he thought it was a stretch as well.

Jesse shifted his weight as he thought. “Well if born vampires do exist, I know one place that would have information about them.”

I could hear the smirk in Chance’s voice as he said, “The underground library.”

“Okay,” I said, “now that just sounds made up.”

Chance chuckled and I could hear the smile in Jesse’s voice as he explained. “It’s called that because it’s supposed to be kept a secret, hidden. Though I did stumble upon some interesting information about its location when I was helping-“

He hesitated and I could practically feel Chance tense up as he anticipated the mention of the one that turned them. I smiled, trying to diffuse some of the tension. “He whose name we do not speak?”

I could tell he was smiling again as he continued. “Yes, him. Anyway, I know the general location and I think we could probably find the library.”

“And maybe when we get close Lizzy can be our vision GPS,” Chance added, grinning I’m sure.

I smiled then said in my best GPS computer voice. “Chance, when possible, make a legal U-turn.”

Jesse chuckled. “I think that means stop comparing her to annoying technological devices.”

“Yeah,” Chance said, grinning again, “I got that.”

“Hey!” Cassie yelled from a few yards away. “Are you done with your little meeting yet? Because I’m kinda freaking out over here!”

“Oh, sorry,” Jesse said as we hurried back over to her, Chance guiding me so I wouldn’t trip over anything.

She wasn’t quite pacing, but she kept moving back and forth, obviously too nervous to stay still. “So it’s impossible, right?” she asked. “There’s no way I could be some kind of weird vampire, right?”

“I’m starting to think nothing’s impossible,” Chance said, his shirt brushing against tree bark as he leaned against a tree.

Cassie’s breathing increased and Jesse took a step toward her. “It’s going to be alright, we’ll figure this out, okay?” Her breathing slowed back to a more normal pace and Jesse continued. “We’re still not sure, but we know where we can find out.”
