Madison
Friday came.
Worst day of my life.
I went to school early. Way early to even see Maria walk through the doors. I was used to not seeing my parents in the morning but when I saw them both sitting in the diner I felt a jolt of shock. They looked up from their papers for a second then went back to them while starting a conversation.
“Good Morning Madison. How are you?” My father mumbled into the paper.
“Good. You?”
“Just fine, thank you.” He sounds like a drone.
It feels too awkward to me so instead of making cereal, I grab a protein bar then head out.
“Oh, Madison!” Mom calls after me.
“Yes?” I turn to her and rip the wrapper open.
“We need to talk when you get home from the prep rally, ok?”
I eye her. “About what?”
“We can talk later.”
I back away, confused and curious about this conversation she wanted to have later. Then, I look at my watch and realize I’m now officially late for picking up Kara early. I grunt and head out the door.
Kara’s house is almost as big as mine. Not nearly big enough for her though. She complains about how much she loves my house, room, pool, everything. I don’t see the difference between any of our stuff. She hops in the car with a huge smile on her face.
“Ready for today?”
Her voice give my stomach a sick feeling. Today was the day we ruin Giselle’s life.
“Of course.” I lie and begin to drive off to school.
We started decorating the gym yesterday but still had other things to do. We had made a huge banner for our football team and set up chairs for them to sit. Looking at the gym kind of disappointed me because even though it didn’t look like we did much, this was taking up so much of our time.
I walked in with the girls and we began stretching for early practice. I wanted every cheer, every flip, every movement to be perfect. I wasn’t about to have these girls fuck up and Grace shit on me because of it later. When I told the girls she would be at the pep rally, the team went crazy. My sister is a legend. I’m just her replica.
She also knew about the plan. She even suggested a few things for it. I didn’t have the heart, or courage, to tell her how much I didn’t want to go through with it.
I didn’t know how much of a big deal Matt was until I told some of the guys what team he played for in college. So not only are the cheerleaders going to be doing their damn best to impress my sister, the football players are going to be doing the exact same. I just don’t get teenagers.
Whatever, I am one.
“Madison…” I turn around from my stretches and see Courtney near the gym door. Her arms are crossed and she’s not wearing any form of make-up.
Something was wrong.
“Can I talk to you?”
I look at the girls, who are staring at Courtney like she wasn’t one of our own. Did they know something I didn’t know or…?
