Madison
Ray was drunk. You could just tell.
Same with Courtney, who found our living room stereo and was blasting Britney Spears, I Wanna Go like it was a party or something. She grabbed Frank, who was also wasted, dragged him towards the middle of the room, and started to dance. He picked her up and swung her around. Frank was pretty strong but then again, Courtney was so small it didn’t really seem like a challenge.
I started to laugh. I leaned back into the couch and turned myself upside down, hanging off the front with my legs in the air. They looked cooler upside down. I looked at Ray who was staring back at me. He had this small grin on his face but got rid of it and looked away.
“Where’s your restroom?” He asked, getting up.
I flipped over and got up to show him.
The hallway was dark but the only light switch to turn it on was on the other side. I couldn’t imagine why anyone would actually do that. They must of got a kick out of kids who were afraid of the dark. I couldn’t stand going down this hallways alone. You could barely see anything.
“Where’s the light?” I heard Ray asked behind me.
I grinned, its like he reads minds. “We live in the dark most of our lives, did you know that?”
“How do you figure?” I heard him stumble against the wall.
I turned to him. “We just do…are you okay?”
He got close to me, breathing lightly. I could smell the whiskey on his breath. I couldn’t see his eyes though, but his shadow fell over me from being taller. He touched my cheek, softly, then traced his thumb over my lips.
“Why do we live in the dark?” He asked, whispering loud enough for me to hear.
My knees went weak. “When you can’t fight your way out of the dark…you live through it…I wouldn’t know where the light is.”
“Who is that from?” Ray kept his hand on my face. He kissed my cheek.
Holy crap, this is happening…. “Me.”
I felt him smile as he pushed against me. I was against the wall when he began kissing my neck. My insides felt like they were on fire as he reached for the back of my head, gently grabbing my hair.
I heard him mumble in my hair, through his light kisses that grazed my neck. “What was that one quote… ‘There isn’t enough darkness in this world even with a light or…?”
“There is not enough darkness in all the world to put out the light of even one small candle.” I corrected him.
He leaned back looking at me through the dark. “Robert Alden.”
I tried to find his eyes. “Yes.”
“Do you really think I’m stupid?” He asked me, sincerely.
“No.”
He let go of me and groaned. “Fuck…”
“What?”
“Where’s your restroom.” He began to stumble away from me towards the end of the hallway. I followed him and pulled him back towards the door he passed. I opened it, shoved him in, then slammed the door.
I’m thinking that it was just a little too intense for him.
I walk back to the living room and see Courtney and Frank on the couch making out. I grunt and groan my way back towards the hallway because I do not want to see that. I thought about going upstairs and recovering from this small rejection Ray decided to spill onto me, but I didn’t want to just end it.
