i, i will be king
and you, you will be queen

"Hi! You must be the new girl, is it Tanner?" I see Mrs. James smiling excitedly at her. The girl nods shyly in response, her mahogany hair falling in her face. "Oh, it's so lovely to meet you!"

"Yo, Mendes!" I whip my head around to find Jack, my best friend.

"Yo, Gilinsky!" We continue to talk for a few minutes until the bell goes.

"Alright! So I've marked last week's homework," exclaims the english teacher when we enter the classroom.

"As you all know, the assignment was to write 150-200 words on the subject of love. Some of you turned the essay into a joke and, surprisingly, some of you took it seriously," she flicks through a couple of graded sheets, squints at one and separates them from the rest, "However, there was one that I really enjoyed reading."

The class bursts into giggles. My hand clenches into a fist under my desk.

"Now, don't worry, I won't make the author read it out," my hand unclenches, "I'll read it."

The teacher clears her throat, "Oh, and if I hear or see any of you laughing or doing any other thing that would show a lack of respect, you will be sent to the headmaster's office immediately. Don't test me." Jack looks over at me and raises his eyebrows.

"Love.

I think that love is a very curious thing. We spend our whole lives trying to find it. But... why? What's so special about it?

People do crazy things for love. To find love. To win love. To force love. Some people spend their whole lives trying to find love, or thinking about love.

Love is this big word used to describe something you're meant to be feeling, but I think it's something a lot simpler than that. I believe that it takes two people who are committed and who gel together on every basis.

They laugh at your stupid jokes, you laugh at their stupid jokes, you can sit quietly and be comfortable in each other's presence, and when you're both angry you can team up and resolve it without screaming at each other.

I just think it takes commitment, and if you like someone a hell of a lot, and you like them even for their flaws, then that is love.

At least in my eyes."

"To be honest," the teacher says after a couple of seconds of silence, "I thought that not one of you would try to understand this task as well as this person has," she stares at the page for a couple of seconds.

"Well, anyway, let's continue."

–the lesson finishes–

I grab my backpack from my chair and start walking out the door, but I stop in my tracks when I hear a soft voice.

"Mrs. James?" The new girl. What was her name? I step out of the classroom and lean my body against the wall.

"Yes, dear?"

"That essay that you read, the one about love? Who wrote it?"

"Hmm, I'm not sure if the author would like their name revealed, why do you ask?"

"Um, no reason really. I just think that their view on the subject is quite... equal to mine."

"Oh, so that's the case," I hear the teacher's smile through her words, "You know the bloke that sat there?"

"The tall, brunette one?" I can almost see Mrs. James nodding, "He wrote that?"

"Why wouldn't he have written it?"

"Um, he just doesn't look like that type of guy, I guess."

"Well, you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover."

"Yeah, you're right. I guess sometimes you can't help but doing so," her voice goes quiet, "Thanks anyway!"

"No problem at all, dear!"

I'm too caught up in their conversation to realize that the girl has walked out of the room, and is now staring at me

"Oh- hi- sorry- um-," she stutters, I grin at her, "Did you-um Did you hear what happened in there?"

"Yes, indeed I did. What's your name?"

"Tanner, yours?"

"Shawn," I smile, "It's a pleasure to meet you."

"You too," she blushes and looks down.

"So, I don't look like the "type of guy" to believe in love?"

Tanner grins and squints at me, "Actually, I kinda see it now."

"Ah, I'm glad," I can't help but grin back at her.

When we reach the end of the hall, it takes all the courage in me to gently grab her hand from where it lays, and bring it up to my lips to give it a chaste kiss.

"I'll see you around, Tanner."
