she came back to school a week later.

i couldn't explain the happiness that radiated through my body.

her brown curls were tamed and straightened, framing her beautiful face.

she wore a giant sweater that covered her slim fingers.

her nose was in a book when i approached her.

"olivia?" i asked.

her blue eyes flickered up, locking with my green eyes.

 she didn't say a word.

i sat myself down beside her on the floor.

"what are you reading?" i inquired, doing my best to make conversation.

i wanted to talk about everything, but i knew it would take some time.

"a book," she replied in a whisper, her gaze landing back on the words in her book.

i scratched my neck uncomfortably, earning a sideways glance from olivia.

"i was wondering if you wanted to-"

"please tell me you're not asking me out."

her blue eyes grew weary and sad.

"no, i just wanted to know if you wanted to hang out sometime. as friends," i said.

she slammed her book shut.

"we are not friends cole. we will never be friends."

her words stung me like acid rain melting on my skin.

"my apologies," i muttered as i stood up and walked away.

in 10 words, she had already managed to break my heart without even knowing it.
