Mom?" Lauren repeated.
"Oh yes, sorry darling" Jane muttered as she slapped Jake's wondering hand away "Joanne.....wait! You were talking to Joanne?!"
Oh great, this morning keeps on getting better and better.
Jake's hand finally decided to let go and seemed to disappear when Jane's best friend was mentioned. Joanne had witnessed everything, their cover could have already been blown and he knew it.
"Yeah, she said you were upset" Lauren added.
"Upset?" Jane muttered. Upset was an understatement and Joanne knew it.
"I just" Lauren struggled to find the right words "I just wanted to sort of protect you" Lauren explained.
"Protect me?"
"I just didn't want you to go back to dad because you were...I don't know...lonely?" Lauren admitted "and with it being Valentine's Day....."
"Listen darling...me and your dad...we're" it was as if Jane could see Jake's face from under the bed "we're never going to be an...item"
"I had a date last night with a hot water bottle, a bar of chocolate and an early night" Jane chuckled, she was going to lie to her daughter again but this time it was for the best "...so I have definitely not seen your father"
Lauren looked at her mom before her eyes caught the bar of chocolate that lay at the side of her bed "what about breakfast?" She asked "my treat?"
"Ok" Jane smiled

Jane jumped up and grabbed her robe as soon as Lauren was safely downstairs. She lay herself down and after looking under the bed, was met with a roughly dressed Jake.
"Jake" she tried her best to keep it in a whispered tone but finding your ex-husband hiding under your bed was something she was finding very hard to be calm about "what are you still doing here?!"
"So your not pleased to see me then?" Jake smirked.
"I..." Jane didn't get time to throw another excuse at him, he had pulled her under the bed with him and shut her up with a kiss.
"Jake" Jane repeated "I have just lied to our daughter and she's down in my kitchen making me breakfast for it! Doesn't that bother you?!"
"Nope" Jake smirked.
"Maybe she's right about me always going back to you...." Jane continued.
"You know she's not right so don't even try to convince yourself otherwise" Jake raised an eyebrow "you know I...."
"You what?" Jane smirked "Go on....say it" Jane urged him with a smile "because believe me...I do not know what we're doing because..."
Jane was shut up with a another kiss "you always rabble when your nervous" Jake chuckled.
"So I'm lying under my bed with my ex-husband and I'm not supposed to be nervous" Jane giggled.
"Well your with me.....so, no"
Jane's eyes focuses on his lips as for the first time in months, SHE leaned in for a kiss.

"Mom"
The sound of the door opening broke then apart.
"Shit" Jane muttered, cursing again when she banged her head off the bed.
"Shhh" Jake pressed a finger to her lips as he kissed her head better.
"Mom?" Lauren's voice drifted down the hallway.
Jane quickly rolled out from under the bed, sighing when she looked down at Jake's hand still locked in hers.
"In here darling" Jane stood up and brushed herself off.
"Mom?" Lauren appeared at the door holding a small tray "oh your up....I was going to bring you breakfast in bed"
"Why don't we eat downstairs?" Jane casually suggested with a smile.
"Sure"

An hour past. A friendly catch up with her daughter would have been lovely but of course, life doesn't work like that. Jane's nervous tapping and kicking had got to Lauren and so questions upon questions had followed. The girl had always been curious.
Jane had of course answered most of them with a simple 'yes' or 'no', occasionally stretching the truth when the time for a lie came.
A creak echoed from up stairs. Jane closed her eyes and mentally cursed Jake. The man has been Stupid enough to move, effectively destroying their plans of getting away with this...Charade. She would have stopped him from breathing all together if she could've but now the worst had happened, she just needed to start thinking of a reasonable and believable excuse that would keep things calm on the Homefront.
"Seriously...that picture again" Jane muttered into her mug of tea.
"What?" Lauren raised an a eyebrow.
"A beautiful picture I got for my new room" Jane sighed as she set the small cup down, her mind on overtime coming up with a plausible excuse "I don't think Adam put it up properly...that's the fourth time it's fallen" she explained.
"If you want I can have a look at it..." Lauren was Immediately cut off by Jane near chocking on her tea.
"Honestly darling, it's fine" Jane smiled "Adams coming round tomorrow so he'll be able to fix it" Jane didn't know why she'd added that part. She hadn't seen Adam in weeks, but her daughter didn't know that.
Lauren was about to call her mother on it or at least try to get all the details about their 'friendship' but her plans quickly disappeared when a loud car horn was heard from outside.
"That's me" she smiled.
"Harley not coming in?" Jane asked.
"Nope. He's been acting strange lately" Lauren explained.
"It'll be wedding nerves" Jane blurted out. She knew why the young man was nervous, he knew everything. The guilt switch flicked inside her, for what felt like the hundredth time that day.
"Let's hope so" Lauren muttered as she embraced her mother.
"No, let's hope not" Jane chuckled as she slid her hands into her daughters "your father was a nightmare the last few weeks running up to our big day"
"Do you still remember your wedding day?" Lauren looked up at her mum using the same curious expression she had when she was an eight years old child.
"Like it was yesterday" Jane spoke in barely a whisper, hoping Jake wasn't paying attention to this conversation in particular.
"...And do you regret it?" Lauren muttered.
"Never" Jane smiled as she kissed the top of her daughters head "sometimes two pieces of a puzzle look and feel like they go together but then...after a while you find a space where one of those pieces is more suited"
"You can't really believe that" Lauren chuckled as she broke away from her mother "dad just saw a woman half his age and went for it. You can't honestly believe that they're a better 'fit' "
"I believe that if me and your father were really meant to be then it wouldn't have happened" Jane smiled at she took her daughters hands.
"I thought you believed that dad was a cheating, lying bastard....well that's what you told us when we were growing up anyway" Lauren giggled.
"I was angry" Jane explained.
"...and your not angry with him anymore?"
"What's anger going to gain me?" Jane asked.
"Satisfaction when you see Agnes kick him out" Lauren giggled.
"Maybe I'm just forgiving?"
"Or maybe your still in love with him?"
