He didn’t know how many days it had been since he was first put in the cell, but if he were to guess, he’d say somewhere around four, five days, maybe even six. It was always dark, so he couldn’t really tell. What he could tell for certain, was that he was in bad shape. Sure he had found himself on more than one occasion in the past in bad shape before, but this time he was sure topped all those other times. At least back then he was able to get some kind of fist aid treatment, but here, not possible. The time seemed to creep slowly and the pain equally so. Concussion? More than likely seeing as he could never see straight, even in the darkness. Broken bones? Most definitely. If there was anything else wrong with him, then he couldn’t tell. He was too tired to try to assess any more of himself, even if he wasn’t as chained up as he was.

“I apologize Akio, but if I were to try to sneak in any food for you, then there would be dire consequences for my actions.” Kinu pulled away the small canteen from Akio to allow him to catch his breath.

Over the days, Kinu would come in to give him water, but nothing more. She had always apologized for not being able to give him anything more. Satoru wouldn’t allow his prisoner to be given any more than water to keep him alive. In all reality he didn’t care if Akio was alive or dead so long as he got his hands on Hisayo.

“I wouldn’t want you to get in trouble. Who would visit me and keep me company then?” Akio gave a weak chuckle.

“Stop it.” Kinu frowned.

“Stop what?”

“Acting like you aren’t affected by any of this. Look at you, you’re a mess and there is nothing I can do dammit! I can‘t-” Kinu broke and cried softly.

She had come to grow fond of Akio over the past few days and even though she was suppose to feel contempt and hatred for him, she couldn’t bring herself to do so. The one she felt hatred and resentment towards was Satoru. If anything good had come of this new ruling for her, then it was that her negative feelings of the two deserters of the clan had been extinguished. After enduring a hard year of pain and suffering, and seeing the same pain and suffering that had been dealt to Akio by the hands of Satoru, she had continued to find herself wanting to escape. She wanted nothing more than to go back to the way things had been before Satoru had taken control. Kinu couldn’t help but give a few muffled sobs.

“The truth is, that I’m worried and afraid.” Kinu abruptly stopped her crying as she heard Akio tell her of his feelings.

“I don’t want to see anything bad happen to Hisayo.” Akio continued. “I know that you may not understand since she and the rest of the clan have had a couple of bad encounters in the past, but those encounters weren’t her fault and it wasn’t the clan’s fault either.”

Kinu began wiping her tears. “What are you talking about? I only know of our attempt to capture her several weeks ago. What other encounter?”

“You must not have been there eight years ago.”

“Eight years ago? What happened?”

“For some reason, Hisayo had lost the control she had over her demonic side.” Akio paused to cough. “She was trying to protect-” Again Akio was interrupted by coughing that was becoming slightly violent.

“Akio, you need to rest.”

“I’m fine.” He continued to cough.

“No, you’re not. Here.” Kinu held up the canteen for Akio.

After he took a few drinks and calmed down, Kinu stood to leave. “I’ll be back later. And don’t croak while I’m away.”

“Growing fond of me are we?” Akio joked as Kinu walked out the door.
