I didn’t want him to get fired for any reason.
This is what I don’t understand about the people who talk so much shit about me. They think I’m some kind of snobby bitch in real life. High school isn’t real life. Its fake…
Maria looked at my car, “Mierda! Did he do that? That’s it mija, I’m calling his father.”
“No!” I sighed. “It wasn’t him, it was his ex.”
“Is she jealous?”
I rolled my eyes and leaned against my car. “I don’t know why, Ray hates me so much.”
Maria touched the scratches and sighed. “Oh well mija, it looks like your dad is going to be mad.”
“I’m not going to tell him.” I grabbed my purse from the car and started to walk towards the house. “I’ll just go to a shop and get it fixed.”
Maria followed me into the house. “And charge it to his credit card? He’ll know anyways.”
I smiled, throwing my backpack on the kitchen counter. After school that’s how it went, Maria and I in the kitchen. She would teach me how to cook and I would teach her about everything I had learned in school. Since it was the first day of school, I was to fill in all the drama from my day. I was like her personal soap opera and she was my therapist.
For someone who came from Mexico and didn’t finish school, Maria always had the best advice. She was wise, funny, and never let me down.
“I’ll deal with it then…how much do you think it will be?”
She thought about it, “Four maybe?”
Hundred!
My mouth dropped, “Four??”
“Let me call Fernando, he knows someone.” She took out her cell phone and went into the fridge, pulling out fruit and yogurt.
“You always know someone who knows someone,” I said, grinning.
I took out my cell phone and noticed that I already had ten new text messages.
Omg wat hapnd? Did ray hurt u? -Kara (Its not hard to spell right when you text.)
Hey, I heard what happened with that asshole Ray…do you want me to take care of it? -Craig
Hey Madison, that Frank guy is hot! I mean I know you hate them but DAAAMN- Courtney
I had to smile at Courtney’s text.
I skimmed the rest, not replying to any of them. I’ll get to it later.
Maria, being the multi-tasked that she is, was on the phone, talking in Spanish to someone about my car, and chopping up fruit to make me a smoothie. I texted my parents to see if they’d be home tonight.
Mom replied yes. I grew excited until Dad texted me and told me he wanted to take mom out for dinner.
Guess not tonight.
They were never here.
My mom liked to travel, see new things, be rich and glamorous in other places than this small southern Cali town. Dad was always ready to do whatever she wanted. It was them two before us. Grace and me. Grace lives in New York now with her fiance. She’s twenty-two and just got engaged. He’s some wall street millionaire with a big nose. I met him once and his attitude annoys me. Plus, he treated Maria like shit and THAT is a no with me.
Dad and Mom know that Maria comes first with me. They don’t mind because I have a babysitter until she goes home at night. She used to live with us when I was smaller but when I grew old enough to stay by myself at night they told her she was only needed during the day.
