Maisie

He stared at me with that pleading look on his eyes. Parang tinitingnan niya ang kaluluwa ko at sinusuyo ito na paniwalaan siya. He wants us to work, but I can't imagine us together, like real lovers.

It's not I'm blocking the possibility of us falling in love, but it was just all of a sudden. How could he like someone like me? We barely know each other.

"Are you serious?"

"Believe me, Maisie."

Sandaling natigil ang usapan namin nang lumapit ang waiter sa table at nilagyan ng laman ang wine glass.

Tumikhim siya at mabilis na tinanguan ang waiter para maka alis na ito. He leaned forward when the waiter was out of sight.

"Don't you want to try?" Tanong niya.

"Kyle, this is not a business proposal so please don't ask me. All of this were all so sudden to me. Naninibago pa ako sa relasyon na meron tayo ngayon and it's just been a week since we got married. Hindi pa ako handa."

"Bakit? Ayaw mo bang totohanin na lang natin ito?"

"Hindi sa ayaw ko..."

"Then what, Maisie?"

Napabuntong hininga ako. "I don't want us to try just because we feel trapped in this marriage. I don't want us to try because we live in the same house and we don't have a choice so practically we have to deal each other everyday." I bit my lip as I gather my courage to voice out everything. "I want to fall for the right reasons."

Dahan dahan siyang tumango tila naiintindihan kung ano ang ibig kong sabihin. Of course I want to have a happy marriage, but marriage without love is just plain commitment.

"I want us to work, but maybe that would only happen if we have greater feelings than liking. I am not going to force myself to you Maisie. But just let me show you how serious I am." Aniya.

I can't look at him directly. Naninibago ako sa mga pinagsasabi ni Kyle. Hindi naman kasi siya ganito dati. He used to be cold to me. Most of the time, we treat each other in a casual way.

Hinaplos ni Kyle ang pisngi ko dahilan para mapatingin ako sa kanya. Nanatili ang kanyang kamay sa baba ko para hindi ako maka-iwas. He gave me his boyish smile again. And for the record, this is the second time that I saw it today.

Kahit nakangiti siya sa akin ngayon, alam ko nay may kalungkutan siyang tinatago. Hindi ako manhid para hindi maramdaman iyon.

He once told me about his miserable past and I know how cruel his plan can be. I may not know the details but it's already crystal clear to me that he wants to get even to whoever killed his parents. Maybe it's the reason why he's not warm to those people around him, even to me. Maybe it's because of the anger that is swallowing him up deep inside.

And now that his giving me these smiles, I want it to stay on his face. If I'm the reason why he is smiling like this, it would be my pleasure to give him a chance to prove himself.

I shouldn't be too hard on this. How could he try if I won't let him in?

I nodded in response. "Okay."

Kinabukasan, tinanghali na ako ng gising. I checked my clock at di nga ako nagkamali. It's already quarter to eleven in the morning. Agad na akong bumangon para makaligo. Pero bago pa man ako makapasok sa CR, nahagip ng paningin ko ang bulaklak na nakapatong sa study table. Tiningnan ko ang card kung kanino ito galing at binasa ang maliit na note.
