Several weeks have past since leaving Costco.
The group has lived off of water and cans of food stored in the cars in case of an emergency.
People had passed on, the group growing smaller and smaller.
As some died, others left. Those who questioned Scouts imposed leadership left throughout the nights, believing they could find somewhere better. Somewhere safer.
Scout's been frail, almost as if made of glass. For days he wouldn't speak, curled up in the back of the truck. One day he got up and took charge, but Jane knew he was still damaged.
The doctor had treated many survivors, been there for many final moments. She had watched them die in front of her, knowing she was their last hope. Knowing she had failed them. But she knew she hadn't failed Lukas.
The boy had woken up later that night, as all the memories of the day came charging at him. The pain, both physically and emotionally, had taken control of his mind and body. So many had died in his presence, and he questioned whether he should continue going or not. But one thing, one person, had kept him going. Olivia.
As one of the few who got out of the store early, Olivia wasn't around to witness her friend's deaths. Hearing the stories from Lukas, her first thoughts were to cry. But she saw him, how broken he was, and knew she needed be strong for him. Jane could fix him physically, but Olivia was the only one who could fix him emotionally. When she wasn't with Lukas, she was with Winona.
Winona's leg was in pain, and she couldn't help out as much as she wanted to. She had time to herself, which she used to think about her family. Ted, Naomi, Jamie. She prayed for Ted to watch over her, and where ever Jamie and Naomi were that they were safe. She had spent time with the girls as well, trying her best to ease their nerves. The most difficult one would have to have been Cecilia.
I fired a gun. She thought. I killed people. Although she had always carried a gun, she had never fired one. Even throughout her entire life on her family's farm, she had never used a gun to kill a living thing. Her father taught her how, but she couldn't even bring herself to shoot an annoying little squirrel. The only time she was away from guns was for the brief two months she had moved from their farm in Nebraska to go to university here in Vancouver. But then the world went to hell, and she was pulled back into the presence of guns once again. Winona listened and comforted her, but Cecilia could see that Savannah had something weighing her down as well.
Savannah felt alone, like she wasn't really a part of the group. Winona offered to talk with her, but Savannah couldn't connect with her, or many people, for that matter. It seemed like there were only two who truly understood her. Luther, a father figure to her, and Evan, who she felt a strange attraction to ever since that night in the house.
Evan couldn't believe that out of the sixteen of his friends he was with that first night in the house, only eight of them are still here with him today. Though, he doesn't know if a ninth may still be alive. During that disastrous last day in Costco, he had been with Max for most of the gunfight, but close to the end, they had gotten separated by a group of walkers. As Evan ran for safety, he saw Max fighting, still trying to fend off the walkers. Evan knew he should go back and help his friend, but when he got out from cover, one of Vince's men was aimed right for him. He thought he was done for, but when he realized he was still breathing, he opened his eyes and found the man on the ground. Venus had saved him. She told him they had to go, and he reluctantly left Max behind.
Venus was furious with Lukas. More than just furious. She watched him drop Jason, her best friend in the entire world. She felt empty and alone, even amongst all these people. But she will never forgive nor forget what Lukas had done to her, and made sure he would know.
Delilah was worried for Venus. She saw the anger in her eyes, and knew that her friend was soon to do something she could never undo. It was Delilah's only hope that she could find someway to stop her.
The winter was dawning upon them fast, and they were still on the road, shelter-less, vulnerable to all the elements.
Including people.
