Random #1 – Death Note, Matt
Click. Click. Click, click, click.
The mouse seemed uncooperative. Like it was a sentient being that despised being under someone else's control. It would do what he said, sure, but it wouldn't do it to the best of its ability, or as fast as it could...
Click. Click, click. Click.
Then again, he might have just been imprinting his own system onto the mouse. It could've been his way of feeling guilt or something like that, not that he had anything to be guilty about! He just...didn't like being under someone else's thumb every second of every day.
Matt reclined in his chair. The monitor was staring at him with a blank word document on the display.
'So now I'm making excuses, huh?' He thought, 'Wonder what'll be next...denial, right? No, maybe it was justifications or something...Wait, why am I even thinking this? Ugh, it's Mello's fault. Mello was the one who made me study for that stupid Psychology test.'
Matt took a deep breath. He didn't need that. Didn't need to put up with that crap. So why did he?
It was not Mello's fault, Matt knew that, but it sure felt like it sometimes. It wasn't Mello who forced him to hang around when he had other stuff to do, it wasn't Mello who wanted to keep his load light, hell, Mello wanted to take extra classes just to catch up with Near, it was Matt who'd stopped him so he didn't keel over one night.
Matt's eyes flashed.
No, he was doing all this to himself. He was the one who'd stay up all night to find an excuse to make Mello's life easier.
Why was he doing all this?
Well, Matt knew Mello didn't have much time left.
Those numbers kept counting down, every second getting smaller and smaller. He'd done the math many times. It always came out to the same year. The same month. The same day.
January 26, 2010.
It wasn't that close, but it was close enough that Matt was afraid. Afraid of what would happen to him when Mello was gone. If there was one thing that he learned about those numbers, it was that they were never wrong.
The goggles fell around Matt's neck as he got up. He walked over to the mirror on top of the dresser. Why Roger insisted they had mirrors was beyond him.
When Matt made his way over to the mirror he was afraid to look up. He knew what he'd see. It wouldn't be the green that his eyes were when he was born, it wouldn't even be the blue of the contacts, it wouldn't be the orange of the goggles' lens either.
When Matt looked up all he saw was red.
