I woke up and felt arms around me. I gasped, snapping my eyes shut and jumping off the bed, only to fall on the floor. All sleepiness was gone as I stared at my surroundings. Am I at the nurse's office? And what the hell is Max doing here? Max was awake already and was staring at me with dry amusement. I scrambled off the floor and tried to get out of the nurse's office. It was locked. I kicked the door, realizing it was pitch black outside.

"Looks like we're stuck here together," Max said, looking like he was stalking his prey. I cowered in the corner, curling myself up into the fetal position and putting my head down.I bet I looked like an infant, but I didn't have a care in the world at the moment. I mean, I was stuck in a room- a small one, at that- with a werewolf.

Max sighed. "Jessie-" he started, but I cut him off. "It's Jessa," I said quietly. I love him so much and it hurt for me to say that, but it had to be done. "Please, Jessa, listen to me! You're killing me here! Literally!" he said. I looked up, but squeezed my legs tighter. "Jessa, please. Stop. I won't hurt you, I promise," he said sadly. "I love you so much and I hate to see you looking at me like I'm some kind of monster."

I sighed, sticking my legs out and putting my head into my hands. "Jessa, let me explain it to you," he said. I nodded, not looking up. "It was the day before Dylan's party. I was walking along the woods, thinking about you," he said, smiling at me softly. "That's when something attacked me. I tried to fight it; I did, but it was really strong. It bit me right here." He pointed to his arm where, at the night of the party, I asked him what it was, and he didn't answer.

"I swear as it was running off, it said, 'Now she will never want you.'" he said softly. "That's when I looked up and realized it was a wolf. I hissed and ran home, not showing anyone. I cleaned it best as I could, but I realized it would scar. I couldn't sleep that night. I woke up the next day and tried to act normal. After school, there was someone waiting at my door."

"It was Alec. He's the Alpha-" Max said. "What's an Alpha?" I asked curiously. He smiled at me. "It's the leader of a werewolf pack. Anyway, I asked him what he wanted and he told me that one of his pack members bit me," Max said. "I, of course, didn't believe him. When he finally convinced me it was true, it was time to go to the party. I told him I would see him later, but I was terrified. I went to the party and I was feeling good. I danced with you, I loved seeing you smile. Then you asked me what the scratches were, and I clammed up."

"I ran away out into the night. If you noticed, it was a full moon that night," he said. "I started to change, and it was horrible. It hurt like hell and I felt like I was dying. I woke up hours later, in wolf form. When you first change, you run to your...ehem...mate." He scratched his head and looked up at the ceiling. "That's when I found you crying. I heard you saying you loved me and that you didn't want me to leave you," he said, smiling at my shocked face. "I looked over you all night, making sure you weren't getting hurt. That is, until some weird guy showed up and started to play with your hair. I wanted to rip his head off."

"Then he carried you away because of your ankle, and I wanted to kill him," Max said, smiling at the thought. "I followed your scent to Zoey's house and waited until you noticed me. I didn't expect you to hug me, but I loved it; my wolf was in heaven. I wanted to mark you right then and there, but that would only scare you. Then two days went by and I didn't see you. I was sad and I wanted you to come back to school. Then, the day before you came back, I made you come out to me and I kissed you so hard. I wanted you to respond, and you did. I made sure you thought it was a dream so you wouldn't confront me on it."
