"Hey! How was the journey?", Sheetal asked, slowly taking the travel bags into her grip.
Sharini just hummed, closing the apartment gates behind her. The two walked across the driveway, crossing the kids that were playing cricket in the parking lot.
"How did your OB go? I saw the live show on my phone. You were great! What did your managers say?" Sharini shot questions like arrows, noticing the little pep in Sheetal's steps as she walked behind the RJ.
"Well you know it went... just... AWESOME!!!"
Sheetal did a quick turn to flash a big smile at the teacher before she delved into the details.
"I already told you almost everything di. Umm.. okay, you know there were these cute twins...."
Sheetal talked all about whatever little moment she thought she had missed telling her as they entered the house.
"And Ravi, I swear, he was trying to help move the speakers. He stepped on one cable, the other one wrapped around his ankle and he fell in front of literally everyone."
With animated expressions, her hands flying in the air, peals of laughter bouncing off the walls, Sheetal reenacted every little mishap.
A weak smile took shelter on Sharini's tired face. She kept her head a little low, just watching the pair of feet in front of her. Sharini barely kept up with the actual stories.
Once they were in the living room, Sharini flopped onto the sofa after discarding her dhupatta. With an arm thrown over her face, blocking out the piercing lights, she stretched out once before curling into the fluffy pillows.
She didn't miss offering a few 'hmm's and 'uh-huh's to Sheetal's stories, but that only lasted for a very few minutes.
Sheetal's voice faded in and out as she shuffled between the rooms, unloading the luggage, putting away the laundry, and washing tiffin boxes.
When Sheetal didn't get any sounds from the other, she decided to go check on her. "Do you want to see the saree, Sharini? It is your favourite color, green-" Sheetal paused mid sentence seeing Sharini's arm fall, stretched out the edge of the sofa. "Sharu?" she called. No response.
She slowly tried to lift the arm covering her eyes to see her fast asleep. Sheetal chuckled, but stayed squatting beside her. After all these days, she gets to see her Sharini up close. She seemed so peaceful asleep, her chest going up and down very lightly in a steady rhythm.
Sheetal took her time to look at her face. Sharini had thick eyelashes that she envied so much. Today, they looked like calm shadows resting softly against the top of her cheekbones.
The little bit of oil pooling around her nose wasn't particularly attractive, but it sure was hella funny.
Her lips. Ever so slightly parted. For the first time in her life, Sheetal thought something, and for the first time, she lingered on the thought instead of looking away.
She remembered how Sharini had kissed her forehead before.
Her eyes lingered on the lips as though she were in a trance. She stared, and she noticed streaks of red.
Sharini had a habit of tearing off the skin on her lips. Sheetal just tsked at the thought of Sharini having chewed off her lips. She should buy the teacher some lip balm, she noted in a corner of her mind.
Slow, hesitant fingers reached forward. Before she knew it, Sheetal was running her thumb across Sharini's bottom lip, her other fingertips grazing her jaw just below her ear.
A mole sat at the corner of her lips, teasing Sheetal. Her curious finger was about to glide over, when all of a sudden, the teacher caught her hand.
"Come here", Sharini murmured, eyes still closed.
