Chapter 19

A yawn escaped my mouth as the jet pierce it way through the clouds, towards Italia Private landing strip. Yawning…huh, haven’t done that in a while. Weirdly, it felt great…human in fact.

I smiled as I took a glance at Emma who was sleeping soundly, head propped against my shoulder, her heartbeat vibrating through my skin. I couldn’t help but snuggle her hair, her natural scent invading my nostrils. The last thirty minutes of the flight, was nothing short of magical. Both of us weirdly decided to throw caution into the wind at the same time and give in to our yearnings. It was that moment, that I found out it wasn’t lust that drew me into her; it was her stubbornness, her caring heart, her strong personality, her warm aura… pure love were the right words.

The sun gleamed in from the cabin window, illuminating her facial features, casting a breathtaking glow around her. Although the sun seared my skin a little, I couldn’t help but be caught in the moment.

The jet flew finally through a sheet of thick cloud cover and the ray of sun was gone.

I sighed and tore my gaze away from her and towards the back of the cabin where Jaden was. He was awake, probably by our loud outburst of passion.

Oops.

He was staring out the window but immediately turned towards me when he felt my eyes on him.

He gave me a look that obviously said ‘What?!’

I shrugged and turn away from him, resting my head on Emma’s once again. Comtemplating for a moment, I decided that I have let this toil on for too long.

When you need a talk, you need a talk.

Making sure, I positioned her head properly that she won’t feel uncomfortable, I slowly rose from my seat, and took my time, making my way towards the back where Jaden was.

He rolled his eyes when he saw me coming but I ignored it and sat to the seat on the other side of the aisle. I cleared my throat which made his head turn towards me.

“What do you want?” He said in a hushed tone, annoyance clearly filling his tone.

I never imagined having myself in this situation and started contemplating a little too long on what to say, making me spit out the words “Why do you hate me…so much.” Without thinking about it.

He scoffed. “Are we seriously having this talk right now?”

I raised an eyebrow. “Trust me, I am not enjoying this more than you do but…I if I were to be constantly around Emma, we need to get along. For her safety…”

Jaden rolled his eyes once more. “Come one dude, obviously I can take care of her myself and we know the only reason you’re here is because some fortune teller said you needed to 500 years ago. Now isn’t that a comforting thought?”

Now, normally, sarcasm coming from Jaden is dismissible, most of the time but the acid in his voice really spiked my emotions. I actually found myself hurt and rather angry. I wanted to say something but found myself lost for words as his words took me off guard.

He stared loft sided and noticed my expression. “The legendary Dustin, lost for words, now that’s a first.”

“Look Jaden. I don’t want to make this hard but I know you are keen on my kind but see it on Emma’s part. Three of us are bound together for this purpose and we need to see to it that we achieve what was destined. So, how are we going to do it when both of us can’t even agree on mutual terms? Think of her, Jaden. I beg of you.” Never in the light of day, will I see myself pleading this guy before me but to what may be of consolation, he actually bought it.

He heaved a heavy sigh and lean his body closer to me. “Fine. But for Emma, nothing else.” He mumbled reluctantly.

A smile spread across my face, which made him frown a little. “Thank you, Jaden.”

He halted me before I went on “Don’t think we are like friends now or anything. I still hate you bloodsuckers.” He retorted.

I shrugged and laid back into the seat. “You know I never wanted all this. Some of us actually prefer to stay sane and keep some hint of their humanity.” Their kind will never understand, how closely our genes are related to them. Mother nature was cruel that way.

“What do you mean?” he mumbled the question, perplexed by my statement.

I chuckled, “Too long a story to tell my friend.”

Jaden rolled his eyes, settling back. “What exactly…is Brandon?” he mumbled, as he stared directly overhead. The question took me off guard a little and it took me a few seconds to process it. Coming up with an answer for that was…challenging.

“He…is basically, dead, a demon. ”

Jaden scoffed. “Of course he’s demon bur why, why him?”

I sighed, as I was afraid of how it would take it to my answer. I could already hear the pain in his voice. “Sometimes, some humans are unlucky. Brandon may have stumble over one of our underground containment pods while the war was going on.”

That earned me a confuse stare. I rolled my eyes.

“We call them containment pods, crafted by both the daruits and the vampires in the 18th century, when demons just came out of the no where. It is made of a fusion of rare minerals and pure metals, fused by the magic of the sage and the blood of the royal born vampires. These ‘pods’ are capable of literally sucking those bloody haggard in one thermos shape cylinder. Impressive really.” I mused, contempt by the fact that humans weren’t the only one advancing with their technologies.

Jaden seem to grow in interest as he leaned closer. “Daruits?

“The gifted ones, in roman, or better known as sages. Humans with God like powers.” I smiled as he pieced it all together.

“So what did the demons do that got both kind so angry?” he asked, intrigued by the topic.

The answer I hope won’t shock him as much. “They were killing your kind off because you all were direct competition to them.”

I swear to god, I never knew one could stretch their eyes so wide.

“Did I hear you right?!”

I was about to answer him when suddenly, the plane turned sharply to the left, then proceed to roll upside down. I act upon instinct and jumped onto the roof when it the plane bellied. Panic surged through me as the only thought in my brain was Emma.

Ignoring Jaden, I dashed to the front of the cabin as the plane flew right side up again.

“Dustin!!” I heard her scream as I was approaching her.

“Hold on, Emma!” I yelled as the plane’s nose pitched upwards to an almost 90 degrees angle. The G force would’ve crushed me if I haven’t been hanging on to an arm rest. I climbed, yes, climbed towards Emma and right then, I could tell she was unconscious as the extreme G force was too much for her body to take.

I felt like a rag doll, as the plane bellied once more, sending me crashing against the ceiling of the cabin. Having regain my balance in an instance, I stumbled towards the cockpit. I don’t know what have gone into the pilot’s brain but I could tell it wasn’t good. Everything was in chaos as things that wasn’t strapped in properly, rolled with the plane, getting a good kick in colliding with me.

With immense strength, I managed to catapult myself literally upwards towards the door of the cockpit, and easily knock it open with one hand. I struggled with the emergency spare door as it tried to close on me but with one hard push, it crumbled.

Moments later, I found myself steering the plane out of its death spiral. What’s even shocking.

The pilot was dead.
