Bard then placed the two ends of his bow and shoved them into the sides of the tower and attached the elastic creating his own windlance. He then turned to me his eyes begging to help and even though my body was weak from inhaling the smoke and slightly burned, not to mention paralyzed with fear.
I stood up and got in front of Bard and allowed myself to be the arrow's balance.
Bard pulled the arrow back as far as he could keeping his eyes on Smaug waiting for the chance to fire the arrow at the loosened scale underneath the beast's left wing.
I couldn't help but shake as I could still hear the dragon coming closer but my husband assured me.
"Stay still (y/n), stay still". I took a deep breath and allowed my body to relax as Smaug then taunted to Bard once again.
"Tell me, wrench! How now do you challenge me?!"
Bard's eyes grew as I knew he had found his target as the dragon continued,
"You have nothing left! But you DEATH!!!" He let out a furious roar and began to charge toward us. A roar so fearsome that it made me turn my head when a voice called me back from my fear.
"(Y/n)! Look at me. You look at me". Bard's voice comforted my fear. His voice soft and warm and his eyes while focused on Smaug with a fierce determination to kill him, also assured me that he wasn't going to miss and that everything would be alright if I just kept looking at him.
My fear disappeared and I nodded with my eyes to him letting him know I would be with him.
You jump, I jump.
Bard pulled the arrow back just a couple inches as he told me,
"Little to your left". Slowly I leaned towards my left until he said, "that's it". He waited for the right moment and as soon as the scale was revealed to him.
He then released the arrow.
I let out a gasp as I felt the wind from the arrow zoom past my shoulder and it felt like a great burden was lifted off of me.
Exhausted and in fear I collapsed into Bard's arms and he reached out towards me and collected me into his arms. We both turned to see the arrow pierce Smaug and he let out an agonizing roar but still charged toward us.
His body grazed the tower which caused it to break and soon we were about to fall into the freezing water. Bard kept a tight hold on me as he cried out.
"Hold on (y/n)! Don't let go of me no matter what!!" As soon as we hit the water, the freezing cold pierced my skin like needles and tried to drag me down when Bard grabbed my hand and pulled me up onto a stray boat.
The two of us panted heavily then I felt Bard place his coat over me trying to warm me up.
"Are you alright?"
"Yes". I panted as we looked at each other then he took one of the oars and began rowing out of the town and the two of us saw the dragon finally fall down upon the burning town.
Smaug is dead.
And my husband was the one to end his life.
By dawn we reached the mainland to see the survivors of Laketown all trying to patch up the wounded, still trying to find their loved ones, and camps were set up as temporary homes. Bard and I walked through the crowd of people trying to find the kids if they had made it out alive as well as trying to find someone else that I've been praying for who also escaped with the survivors and not amongst the dead.
My mother, Hilda Bianca. The seamstress of Laketown.
At first I thought I was hearing things when I heard my mother's voice. I ran towards the sound of her voice with Bard calling out my name. When I came to a clearing I saw my mother arguing with the weasel of the town Alfrid, the Master's dirty dog who would stop at nothing to ruin my husband's good name and make the people of Laketown more miserable than it was. He pulled my mother back and was just about to hit her when I ran and gripped his hand as tight as I could.
"I wouldn't go turning on your own Alfrid. Especially on my Mother!" I snarled in his ear as I twisted him around and tripped him up on his feet sending him to the ground on his back.
I looked to my mother and hugged her tightly and sobbed thanking to High above that she was alive.
I also heard another familiar voice cry out from the crowd.
"DA!" I turned to see it was Tilda along with Sigrid and Bain.
"Come here!" Bard said as he knelt down and picked Tilda up and Bain and Sigrid said to their father and hugged him. I smiled and leaned against my mom who then nudged me forward.
"Go on love, be with your children, they lost one mother already, don't make them think they lost another one". She then placed one of the blankets she managed to smugly out of the town before it burned and gave it to me. I nodded to her and she kissed my forehead and backed away while I walked towards Bard and the kids.
"MA!!" Bain cried out soon Sigrid gasped and she and Bain held onto me and Tilda reached out towards me crying out Ma over and over. Bard handed her to me and she held onto my neck tightly.
My mother instincts went into flash flood as I held my kids tightly and sobbed just as they did thanking that they made it out alive.
Bard then came up behind me and the two of us held onto our children kissing them and holding them tight.
"I thought we lost you again Ma!" Tilda whimpered. I separated from her and said as I wiped away her tears.
"No my little Tilda, as long as I'm here. I'll never leave you or your brother and sister. I'm going to be here for a long time to see you grow into a beautiful young woman". I kissed her forehead and held her against my breast.
After Bard got his praises for killing the dragon from the town and Alfrid trying to be the good guy in saying that Bard was a born leader, but Bard denying that he was the 'Master of Laketown'. The town turned against Alfrid for helping the Master escape with all the gold Laketown had only to be sunk down the water when Smaug died and landed on top of his boat.
I strongly went with the town ripping Alfrid's limbs off but my husband being the sane one, ordered the men to let him go as he delivered his speech.
"LOOK AROUND YOU! HAVE YOU NOT HAD YOUR FILL OF DEATH!? Winter is upon us! We must look to our own! To the sick and the helpless. Those you can stand tend to the wounded, and those who have strength left follow me. We must salvage what we can".
"What then? What do we do then?" My mother asked, Bard turned to her and simply said.
"We find shelter".
So as it was stated, we packed up only what we needed and began our journey to seek the nearest shelter before Winter struck us hard. Bard and I were alone together when I said.
"You know that we now have barely enough to survive on our own right?"
"I do, but whatever happens, I'll be right there by your side to protect you, our children, and the town remember? You jump, I jump". I smiled and said.
"Yes, you jump, I jump". We kissed each other lovingly then lead the survivors of Laketown to seek shelter within the ruins of Dale near the mountain now that the dragon was gone we could seek shelter there and try to survive.
For Bard and I live by the code and if one of us goes, the other will follow to the ends of Middle Earth.
