It was New Year's night in Jasper, Nevada. The desert air was cool and quiet beneath the distant shimmer of fireworks bursting across the sky. Lights flickered over the small town, casting fleeting colors of red, gold, and blue that danced across the windows of June Darby's modest home.
Inside, June sat on the edge of her bed, a deep unease twisting in her stomach. For days she had felt unwell—nauseous, dizzy, and restless—and tonight, as laughter and celebration filled the night beyond her walls, she could no longer ignore it. Slowly, she rose and made her way to the bathroom, each step heavy with anxious dread.
Under the harsh glow of the bathroom light, June stared at the small test in her trembling hands. Minutes passed, feeling like hours. When the result appeared, her breath caught in her throat.
Two lines. Positive.
Her heart sank. The noise of fireworks outside became distant, hollow. A wave of disbelief crashed through her as she leaned weakly against the sink, the world tilting around her.
Across town, under the vast Nevada sky, Megatron and his conjunx endura, Novastar, stood together upon a hill overlooking the city. The reformed warlord's metallic frame reflected the bursts of color in the sky as Novastar leaned gently against him, her optics alight with quiet affection. Together, they watched the fireworks—symbols of new beginnings and fleeting peace.
But back in the quiet of her home, June Darby watched them too from her window. She could see them from a distance, silhouetted against the light of the explosions. Her husband and his Cybertronian wife—together, content, a picture of unity that should have filled her with warmth. Instead, it filled her with sorrow. She smiled faintly, but the smile was empty.
Stepping away from the window, June walked down the hallway, her pulse quickening. She pulled out her phone, her hands shaking as she scrolled to her mother's number. When the call went unanswered, she waited for the tone, her voice trembling as she began to speak.
"Mom... it's me, June Darby. I—I don't know if you'll ever hear this, but I had to try... I'm sorry I couldn't call you directly. Please, if you get this voice message... I need you to know something..."
Her hand shook as she lifted the pregnancy test into view, staring at the result through tear-blurred eyes.
"I'm pregnant... with Megatron's child!"
The words echoed in the empty house, a confession she could barely believe herself. The phone slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering onto the hardwood floor. She clutched the test tightly, her tears spilling freely now.
"Oh, God... What am I going to tell my son Jack and his wife, Miko?!? What am I going to tell Megatron?!! I never wanted to go through this again... not after what happened with my ex-husband."
Her voice broke on the last word. The fireworks outside faded into silence. June sank to the floor, her sobs quiet but raw, echoing through the lonely home as the clock struck midnight—welcoming a new year she was not ready to face.
The scene slowly faded to black.
By morning, the first light of dawn crept through the curtains.
Megatron and Novastar had left for a quiet outing together—a rare chance to enjoy the fragile peace between Earth and Cybertron. They walked side by side beneath the pale sun, their conversation soft, their bond evident in every glance.
Back at home, June remained in her room, curled beneath the sheets as the weight of her secret pressed down upon her. Her eyes were red from sleepless tears, her mind spinning with fear and uncertainty.
The new year had just begun... but for June Darby, it already felt like the end of something she once believed was safe.
A FEW HOURS LATER...
