The first bell rang, echoing through the hallways like a starting gun. Elena tightened her backpack straps, already dreading the sea of students waiting outside her classroom. And, of course, waiting for her was him.
Jackson Hayes. The so-called “bad boy” of Willow Creek High. Leather jacket, smirk that could ruin a day, and that aura of trouble that seemed to follow him like smoke. Honestly, Elena didn’t know why anyone liked him. And she certainly didn’t understand why he always seemed to enjoy making her miserable.
“Watch where you’re going, nerd.”
She spun around, ready to snap back, but he was already gone—sliding down the hall like he owned it. Elena clenched her fists, muttering under her breath. He’s impossible.
Class started, but her thoughts kept wandering. Every time Jackson’s name came up, her stomach twisted. Not from fear—well, maybe a little—but something else. Something she didn’t want to admit. She hated him. She really hated him.

“Just… go sit with someone else,” she muttered.
“Why? You don’t like me, but you can’t stop looking,” he said, leaning back with that irritating grin.
