It wasn't a moment.
There was no dramatic lighting. No heart-racing music swelling in the background. No sunset. No kiss.
Just Sophie, sitting cross-legged on Keefe's floor, sorting through a pile of scrolls they were supposed to deliver to the Council. Her hair was up in a messy bun. She had ink on her cheek.
Keefe was watching her again. Quietly this time.
Not teasing. Not grinning.
Just watching.
"You're doing it again," she said without looking up.
"Doing what?"
"That thing where you stare at me like I'm a puzzle you're trying to solve."
"Maybe you are," he said. "And maybe I like puzzles."
Sophie rolled her eyes but couldn't stop the tug of a smile.
Keefe didn't press her. He never did when it really mattered. That was the annoying part. The part that made her want to say things.
She sighed and dropped the scroll she was holding.
"I do love you, you know."
Keefe blinked. "Wait—what?"
Sophie didn't look at him. She picked up another scroll. "Technically speaking. If you were wondering."
"Oh no no no." He scrambled across the floor until he was right next to her. "You don't get to 'technically speaking' that. Say it again. Properly. Like a romantic person."
"I am romantic," she said, pretending to be very interested in a boring report from Councillor Clarette.
"Yeah, in the 'here's a protein bar and a hug' kind of way."
She laughed under her breath. "You love it."
"I love you," he said. Instantly. No hesitation.
Sophie's heart stuttered.
She looked up then, finally, and met his eyes.
Ice blue. Steady. Real.
And she smiled.
"Good," she said softly. "Because I wasn't joking."
Keefe was quiet for a second.
Then he grinned. "Took you long enough, Foster."
She kissed him before he could say anything else.
Because technically speaking? She had waited long enough too.
