They were sitting at their usual spot — the edge of the Crystal Lake — tossing tiny pebbles into the water.
Keefe suddenly turned to her, eyes twinkling with that familiar mischievous glint.
"Marry me," he said.
Sophie almost choked on air. "W-What?!"
He shrugged, casual as ever. "Yeah. You, me, forever chaos. Sounds pretty good, Foster."
Sophie blinked at him, heart hammering way harder than it needed to.
"You can't just—" she waved her hands wildly. "—casually ask someone to marry you!"
Keefe smirked. "I didn't say I was casual. I'm dangerously charming, remember?"
She rolled her eyes but couldn't help the smile tugging at her lips. She leaned back on her palms, staring out at the glittering water.
"Ask me in two years," she said finally, a little breathless, "and I'll say yes."
His face lit up, like she had just handed him the stars themselves.
"Deal," he said, offering his pinky.
Sophie laughed and hooked her pinky with his.
The breeze off the Crystal Lake was warm and sweet, the sun painting gold on the water. Sophie skipped a pebble across the surface, lost in thought.
Behind her, quiet footsteps crunched on the grass.
She turned, spotting Keefe strolling up, hands behind his back like he was hiding something.
He stopped a few feet away, a teasing smile playing on his lips.
"Soph..." he said, voice a little softer than usual. "Do you remember this day? Two years ago?"
She tilted her head, squinting at him.
"Nope?" she said, popping the 'p' playfully.
Keefe clutched his chest like she had mortally wounded him. "Wow, Foster. Just... wow. You have a photographic memory! How do you not remember?."
She grinned. "Guess you'll have to jog my memory."
He smirked, took a dramatic step forward, and in one smooth motion, dropped onto one knee.
Sophie's breath caught.
"Maybe this will refresh your memory," Keefe said, pulling out a small, dark ring box(GUYS ITS ACTUALLY JUST AN EMPTY BOX) from behind his back and flipping it open.
Inside was a simple silver ring — beautiful, unassuming, perfect.
Sophie gaped at him. "Keefe—"
"Marry me," he said, not asking — declaring.
She sputtered. "That wasn't even a question!"
Keefe just grinned wider. "That's because I wasn't asking," he said smoothly. "You're mine, Foster. Always have been."
Sophie laughed — a sparkling, beautiful sound that made Keefe's heart absolutely soar.
"If you did ask..." she said, trying to sound annoyed but absolutely beaming, "I'd say yes."
Keefe slipped the ring onto her finger like he'd done it a million times in his dreams.
Then he grabbed her hand, twirled her around under the wide blue sky, and caught her again with a look so full of love it made her knees wobble.
"You said yes," he whispered, forehead resting lightly against hers.
"I did," she whispered back.
And somewhere between the spinning and the laughing and the forever promises, Sophie realized —
she wouldn't change a single second of their story.
