The next morning, Sophie woke up to a soft knock on her door. She wiped at her swollen eyes, groaning softly. "Not now, Keefe."
The door creaked open anyway, and Keefe peeked in, holding a tray of breakfast—complete with a steaming cup of lushberry tea, a plate of butterblasts, and a slightly squashed cupcake.
"Foster, you didn't say never. You just said 'not now.' And now it's... well, now-ish," he said with a sheepish smile.
Sophie glared at him, but it lacked her usual fire. "What do you want?"
Keefe stepped inside cautiously, setting the tray down on her nightstand. "To apologize. And before you say anything, I know I messed up. Big time. Like, even more than the time I thought it was a good idea to prank Sandor with that invisible stink bomb."
Sophie raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. "Keefe—"
"I'm serious, Sophie," he interrupted, his voice softer. "I said some really awful things yesterday. Things I didn't mean. And I know I hurt you."
Her expression softened slightly, but she didn't respond right away. Keefe took that as his cue to keep going.
"I was frustrated," he admitted, sitting on the edge of her bed. "Not at you. At... everything. Myself, mostly. You're right—I push people away. I've been doing it for so long, it's like a bad habit I don't know how to break."
Sophie hugged her knees to her chest, her voice quiet. "You don't have to do it alone, you know. I want to help you, but I can't if you keep shutting me out."
"I know," Keefe said, his tone heavy with regret. "I guess I was scared. Scared that if you saw all the mess inside my head, you'd realize I'm not worth the effort."
Sophie's heart ached at his words. She reached out, placing a hand on his arm. "You are worth it, Keefe. Every bit of it. But you've got to let me in. I'm not asking you to fix everything overnight—I just want to be there for you."
Keefe looked down at her hand, a small, tentative smile tugging at his lips. "I think I can do that. But, uh, I'm gonna mess up sometimes. Probably a lot. Fair warning."
Sophie gave a soft laugh, wiping at her eyes. "I think I can handle it. Just... no more saying I'm too perfect or whatever, okay? That's not fair."
"Deal," Keefe said, holding out his pinky. Sophie hesitated, then looped her pinky around his, the smallest of smiles on her face.
"Oh, and I brought those human cupcakes," Keefe added, his grin returning to its usual lopsided charm. "Because nothing says 'I'm sorry' like human dessert, right? Even if they don't have the same pizzazz as elvin desserts."
Sophie laughed again, the tension between them finally breaking. "You're impossible, you know that?"
"Yeah," Keefe said, his voice warm. "But I'm your impossible."
Sophie rolled her eyes but couldn't hide her smile. "You're lucky I put up with you, Sencen."
"Luckiest guy in the Lost Cities," he replied with a wink.
And for the first time in days, things felt okay again.
