Serena suddenly opened her eyes, and her vision was met with a blinding whiteness.
The stinging smell of disinfectant filled her nostrils, and only then did she realize she was lying in a hospital bed.
With a *ding*, a line of golden text suddenly appeared before her eyes:
"Welcome to the world of *The CEO's Substitute Wife*. Your identity is: the villainess, Serena."
Before Serena could process this, she heard hurried footsteps outside the hospital room. Instinctively, she closed her eyes.
"Selene, are you really okay?" A deep male voice rang out, the concern in his tone like a knife stabbing into Serena's heart.
It was her fiancé, Elliot.
"It's all my fault. If I hadn't insisted on going to the rooftop to read, you wouldn't have misunderstood..." Another voice, timid and soft, spoke up. "I shouldn't have been there. Because of me, Serena fell down the stairs while looking for me."
It was Selene.
Serena clenched the bedsheet tightly. This scene was all too familiar. Just half an hour ago, she had seen Selene and Elliot being intimate on the rooftop. In a fit of rage, she had rushed up, only to lose her footing and fall down the stairs.
At that moment, a line of colorful bullet comments flashed before her eyes:
["Holy crap! The classic plot twist is here!"]
["Serena's about to start scheming!"]
["She's going to accuse Selene of pushing her down the stairs any second now!"]
Before Serena could finish reading the comments, she heard Selene's tearful voice: "Serena, you're awake!"
Putting on an act, she opened her eyes to see Selene's tear-stained face and the flicker of pity in Elliot's eyes.
"Does it hurt?" Selene reached out to check her injuries.
But Serena suddenly felt a wave of dizziness— not an ordinary kind, as if her consciousness was being forcefully pulled into another space. The scene before her began to distort and shift.
She saw herself, consumed by jealousy, framing Selene for stealing jewelry, nearly getting her expelled from school. To protect Selene, Elliot secretly acquired the shares of Serena's family company.
Then, Serena's father suffered a heart attack and passed away due to the company's bankruptcy. Unable to bear the blow, Serena's mother chose to end her own life.
The final image was of herself, mentally broken, spending the rest of her days in a psychiatric hospital.
"No!" Serena's eyes snapped open, her forehead drenched in cold sweat.
The bullet comments continued to flash:
["???"]
["This villainess's ending is so tragic!"]
["She's pitiful, but it's her own fault for bullying the female lead!"]
["I heard Elliot gave Selene all of Serena's family assets as a wedding gift. Is that true?"]
Serena bit her lip hard. She couldn't repeat this tragedy. She had to change this ending!
"Serena, are you okay?" Selene hesitated. "I know you've never liked me, but..."
"Selene," Serena suddenly interrupted her, "I was wrong about what happened on the rooftop."
Elliot's eyes visibly flickered. In his memory, Serena had never admitted her mistakes so readily.
