Shadow Milk Cookie clapped his hands together, floating above the board with an eager grin. "Alright, alright! Let's get this game going! You gotta tell the truth, only the truth, and nothing but the truth! Or your pieces won't move!"

Reader Cookie shot him a skeptical glare, arms crossed. "Like you will go easy..."

Shadow Milk Cookie gasped dramatically. "Oh, fine, FINE! I'll start with an easy one! For you, my trickster." He twirled midair, the light catching in his swirling tailcoat. "Here goes! What is... a lie?"

A heavy silence fell upon the board.

Then—

Whoom!

The first of the white pieces, belonging to their side, moved forward.

Chess Piece GingerBrave, still adjusting to his form as a knight, hesitated. "Uh... by the way... what happens when two pieces meet at the same square...?"

Chess Piece Reader Cookie, clad in their regal queen attire, sighed. "You won't like the answer to that question..."

Black Sapphire Cookie let out a dramatic chuckle. "Usually, whoever makes the move captures the other piece! However! We play a bit differently here... Oh, you'll see!"

Truthless Recluse, his gaze unreadable, finally spoke. "...The antipode of truth."

Whoom!

One of the dark pieces—one of their own—moved forward in response.

Shadow Milk Cookie's smirk widened. "Very well. Then! What is the truth?"

Truthless Recluse's voice remained steady. "The only right thing that must be protected."

Chess Piece Strawberry, holding strong as a rook, gasped. "Oh, look...!"

A black piece, one of the unaligned ones—not one of their friends—was suddenly obliterated by the opposing white piece.

Chess Piece GingerBrave flinched. "Gah! That Black Sapphire Cookie just shattered into pieces!"

Chess Piece Strawberry trembled. "Oh no...! Then it means—!"

Chess Piece GingerBrave gulped, looking over at another familiar piece on the board. "P-Pure Vanilla Cookie! Good luck!"

Chess Piece Reader Cookie, standing regally, nodded. "Not only that, but also your cleverness!"

Shadow Milk Cookie clapped again. "Hehe! See? It's fun! NEXT QUESTION! How do we judge what is right? Allow me to elaborate... it's what you did during your first encounter with Dark Enchantress Cookie..."

Truthless Recluse tensed. His fingers twitched slightly.

Shadow Milk Cookie's smile grew sharper. "Yes, yes! Did you think about your kingdom? Hmm? And what about your friends, other Heroes? What about little Reader Cookie? Each one of them must have gone through so much, watching your last-ditch attack fail so miserably. Was it really the right choice?"

Reader Cookie stiffened at those words. They didn't want to remember that day. The day they lost their home. Their family. Strawberry Cookie, standing firm beside them, saw the hurt flicker across their face and clenched her fists. Even though Reader Cookie had shared their past before, it was clear—it still hurt.

Chess Piece GingerBrave bristled. "What kind of question is that?! He's provoking you!"

Black Sapphire Cookie waved a hand dismissively. "Oh, let's all calm down! Master Shadow Milk Cookie is simply asking a question!"
