The delivery room felt suffocatingly quiet the moment Dr. Manning disappeared with the baby in her arms. The soft click of the door shutting behind her was deafening, leaving a gaping void in its wake.
One nurse had remained, her calm demeanor a sharp contrast to the chaos unraveling before her eyes.
Jesy's chest heaved as sobs tore through her, her trembling hands clutching at the hospital bed rails.
"What's happening to her? What's wrong with my baby? Why aren't they saying anything?"
Janis was by her side in an instant, her own hands shaking as she tried to soothe her daughter.
"Jesy, love, you've got to breathe. She's in good hands. The doctor knows what she's doing."
"I didn't even get to hold her!" Jesy cried, her voice breaking. Tears streamed freely down her cheeks as panic constricted her chest. "What if—what if she's not okay? What if something's really wrong?"
Leigh-Anne paced the small room, her hands pressed against her forehead.
"She's gonna be fine. She has to be fine." Her words sounded more like a prayer than reassurance, her voice trembling.
Jade knelt beside the bed, her hand wrapping tightly around Jesy's.
"Jes, listen to me. Dr. Manning's been your doctor for years. She wouldn't leave unless it was necessary. And she's bloody brilliant. She's got this."
Jesy turned to her, desperation etched into her face. "But what if she doesn't, Jade? What if this is my fault? What if something I did—"
"Stop it," Janis interrupted, her voice firm but shaking. She cupped Jesy's face in her hands, forcing her teary eyes to meet hers. "Don't you dare blame yourself. This is not your fault."
The nurse, standing by the monitors, stepped closer. Her tone was calm but authoritative, meant to cut through the panic.
"Ms. Nelson, I promise you, Dr. Manning is simply being thorough. Most warning signs in newborns can mean many things, but most often, it's something minor. She's just ruling everything out."
Jesy barely heard her, her hands trembling as she pressed them to her chest. Her breathing was shallow, her sobs choking her words.
"I just—I just want her back. I need to see her. Please."
Before anyone could respond, another doctor entered the room. He was older, his expression calm but serious as he pulled on a pair of gloves.
"Good evening, Ms. Nelson," he greeted softly, nodding to the nurse. "We need to deliver the placenta now. It'll only take a moment."
Jesy shook her head furiously, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks. "No! Not until they bring her back. I don't care about me. I care about her!"
Janis gently took her hand, her own tears glistening in her eyes. "Love, you need to let them do this. It's important for you."
Leigh-Anne moved closer, placing a hand on Jesy's arm. "We're right here, Jes. We're not going anywhere."
Jade added, squeezing Jesy's hand. "And the second Dr. Manning gets back, we're getting' answers. We'll make sure of it, pet."
The nurse leaned in, her tone gentle but firm. "Ms. Nelson, it'll only take a minute, and it's a painless process. I'll stay with you the entire time."
Jesy's sobs quieted into hiccups as she reluctantly nodded. The doctor got to work quickly, explaining each step in soothing tones as he worked.
