Agent Compromised
SHIELD Underground Lab in Mojave Desert, New Mexico May 2nd, 2012 10:32 pm
Although Lydia had to return to her normal SHIELD duties after she was taken off the assignment of converting Steve Rogers into another agent, they never lost touch. Lydia tried repeatedly to get him to use his phone, but Steve insisted on communicating via handwritten letters.
They never fell out of touch, and Lydia never revealed where he was, until today.
"So, what's this emergency? Not another 084, is it?" Lydia felt the tension in the helicopter so thick she could cut it with her dullest blade. When it got to be too much, she felt the need to talk, no matter how dire the conversation topic was.
"No, it's not another one." Maria confirmed extra loudly over the extreme noise emitting from the whirring blades of the helicopter Nick Fury demanded they enter half an hour ago.
"We're in New Mexico, right? It isn't Thor again, is it? Or maybe his brother—"
"No, it isn't." Fury flatly denied. Lydia rolled her eyes at the series of denials.
"Well stop telling me what it isn't and start telling me what it is." Lydia demanded from the two secret keepers sitting next and across from her on the chopper. Fury and Maria shared a contemplative look, speaking through their silence to convey a sense of union between them to Lydia who had never felt more left in the dark.
"You will be informed more on the situation when we touch down, Agent Stark. Until then, not another word about it." Fury put his foot down, both verbally and physically. He scooted towards the window to close himself off from Lydia, but that didn't stop her from talking.
"Fine. There's so many other things we could talk about, like... the weather." Fury closed his eyes to block out the sight of her annoyingly contagious smile. Maria didn't mind the contagion though, as she freely let a grin slip out.
"Awfully dark out at this fine hour, isn't it?" Fury let a singular chuckle escape before putting up a front as he broodingly glared out the window. He had to focus, as this situation was nothing to laugh about, yet somehow Lydia always managed to make it happen.
"We're two minutes out, sir." The pilot announced. As soon as the helicopter landed, Agent Coulson was already waiting to greet his superiors on the landing platform.
"How bad is it?" Lydia was dying to know what on Earth they were even talking about. Maria narrowed her eyes, aiming them straight at the back of Lydia's head. Coulson whipped off the sunglasses that, ironically, Lydia gave him for his birthday last year.
