Dr. Jeon Jihyun stepped out of the hospital's dimly lit entrance, the cold night air hitting her like a slap. Her exhaustion was palpable-hours of intense care had drained her, and her shift had been longer than anticipated. Her car had broken down earlier that morning, leaving her stranded. With no other options and the evening's chill biting at her, she had taken a shortcut through this dark and deserted alley, hoping to reach home faster. She felt a deep fatigue settling in from her long shift at the hospital; the promise of her warm bed was a distant beacon she yearned for.
The alley was dimly lit, the occasional flickering streetlight casting long, eerie shadows. The pavement was damp, the remnants of an earlier rain making the ground slick and treacherous. As she walked, Jihyun tried to push away her unease, focusing instead on the comforting prospect of home. Her footsteps echoed softly against the walls of the narrow passage.
Her mind was preoccupied with the day's challenges-patients, surgeries, and the relentless pressure of her job. It was in this distracted state that she heard it: a muffled groan, followed by the unmistakable sound of a body hitting the ground. Her head snapped up, and she slowed her pace, her medical instincts kicking in despite her exhaustion.
Curiosity mingled with concern as she moved cautiously toward the source of the sound. Rounding a corner, she was confronted with a troubling sight. A man lay slumped against the wall, his clothes stained with blood. Two figures hovered over him, their voices harsh and menacing.
"Thought you could just walk in here and not face the consequences?" one of them sneered.
Jihyun's heart skipped a beat as she recognized the man on the ground. It was Kim Taehyung, a notorious figure from the underworld she had heard about in whispers but never imagined she'd encounter. He was barely conscious, his face contorted in pain as the attackers continued their assault.
She hesitated, weighing her options. Helping him could endanger her life, but her medical training and sense of duty urged her to act. Steeling herself, she edged closer, trying to remain as silent as possible. Just as she reached Taehyung, the attackers' harsh voices faded, and their footsteps echoed away. It seemed they had temporarily left their victim.
Jihyun knelt beside Taehyung, who was breathing heavily, his eyes fluttering open momentarily. "Hang in there," she whispered, trying to soothe him despite her fear. She quickly assessed his injuries: several cuts and bruises, and a more serious wound on his side. She fished out her phone to call for help, but as she was about to dial, she heard distant voices approaching.
Panicking, Jihyun looked around. There was no time to wait for emergency services. She had to get Taehyung to safety herself. "We need to move," she said urgently to Taehyung. "Can you walk?"
Taehyung tried to respond, but his voice was too weak. Jihyun, with the aid of adrenaline and determination, helped him to his feet, guiding him along the alley. Her heart pounded as the sounds of footsteps grew louder, signaling that the attackers might return.
As they moved, she heard the distant sound of approaching vehicles. They had to act quickly. Jihyun guided Taehyung toward a small, abandoned building she had noticed earlier. It seemed to offer some shelter and potential safety. They stumbled inside, Jihyun holding Taehyung up as best as she could.
The building was dark and musty, with broken windows and debris scattered on the floor. Jihyun laid Taehyung down gently, trying to keep him calm. She rummaged through her bag for any supplies she could use to tend to his injuries, but it was clear they needed more help than she could provide on her own.
Just then, a shadow appeared at the entrance of the building. Jihyun's breath caught in her throat. She quickly grabbed a nearby metal rod for defense, her heart racing. The figure stepped into the dim light, revealing a man in a dark suit with a serious expression. His presence was imposing, and Jihyun's instincts told her he was not just a passerby.
"Stay back!" Jihyun warned, raising the rod. "I'm trying to help him."
The man raised his hands in a placating gesture. "I'm not here to harm you," he said, his voice calm but firm. "I'm here to help."
Jihyun's eyes narrowed. "Who are you? Why are you here?"
"I was following the people who attacked him," the man explained. "They're still searching for him. If you want to keep him safe, you need to come with me."
Jihyun's mind raced. She had no reason to trust this stranger, but Taehyung's condition was worsening, and she couldn't afford to be cautious. The man seemed to sense her hesitation and stepped closer.
"Please," he said. "We need to move him before they find us. I can get us out of here safely."
Jihyun looked at Taehyung, whose eyes were closing again. She could see the pain etched on his face. With a reluctant nod, she agreed to follow the man. They carefully lifted Taehyung, moving him towards the exit.
As they made their way out of the building, Jihyun's mind was filled with questions. Who was this man? Why was he helping them? And how would they escape the danger that lurked so close?
The distant sounds of footsteps grew louder, and Jihyun felt a shiver of fear. The unknown figure led them down a series of winding streets, each turn bringing them closer to safety-or so it seemed. They reached a secluded area, where the man gestured for them to stop.
"This is as far as I can take you," he said. "There's a safe house nearby where you can get medical help for him."
Jihyun glanced at Taehyung, whose breathing was shallow. "Is he going to make it?"
The man's expression was unreadable. "He will if we get him to help quickly. But you need to be careful. They are still looking for him-and for you."
....looking for.....jihyun ?
