Life rarely unfolded as one hoped, and for Rieha, that truth had long since lost its sting. She had grown accustomed to disappointment, a dull ache that had become as familiar as the air she breathed. Yet, despite her hardened exterior, there were moments when the weight of it all pressed down on her, suffocating and relentless.
She sought solace in the small, dimly lit dressing room backstage, where she and the others would be taking the stage in just twenty minutes.
The days since Sungjae's proposition had blurred together in a haze of sleepless nights and restless thoughts. It was an offer that promised an easy, swift solution, but its risks loomed large, making her hesitant to decide. Slumped on the worn-out couch, Rieha ran a hand through her tangled hair, her gaze fixed on a distant point on the ceiling.
An unshakeable sense of unease gnawed at her, an inexplicable wrongness that she couldn't pinpoint. It lingered like a shadow, making her feel like a failure, a burden, someone who couldn't fulfill her responsibilities. Her family—whether deserving or not—relied on her, and she despised herself for wavering, for not immediately seizing the easiest and fastest opportunity that lay before her.
And then there was Nyuji. Nyuji, who shouldn't matter.
Rieha had made certain of that, pushing her away with biting comments and harsh criticisms that she didn't even quite believe herself. As long as Nyuji was hurting, as long as she wasn't in her way, everything would be fine. But why did it not seem so?
The door to the dressing room suddenly swung open with a force that startled Rieha. She looked up, her eyebrows knitting together in irritation as a frazzled Nyuji slipped inside. The younger woman's hands were shaking, her eyes darting around the room like a frightened animal— unsure if she could stay or leave—
"Just come in," Rieha sighed.
Nyuji closed the door behind her and began pacing the small space in front of her. Her entire body was tense, and the sight of her obvious distress tugged at something deep within Rieha, something she wished she could just fucking ignore. She just recovered from her fever, what else happened now?
"What's wrong?" The words slipped out before she could stop them, and she immediately regretted it, a wave of self-loathing washing over her.
"I-I need my pills," Nyuji's voice trembled, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps.
"You couldn't find the manager?"
"He said I ran out of pills,"
Rieha sighed again, pulling out her phone and busily typing on it. She tried to remain detached, uncaring and unconcerned, but the pure panic in Nyuji's eyes was impossible to ignore. Her fists clenched and unclenched, her entire body shaking.
"Seriously, do you even care?! I can't go out like this in twenty minutes!" Her voice broke, and the desperation in it cut through Rieha's defenses. She put her phone down and looked at her, she gulped, her eyes locked on the trembling hands of Nyuji, calmly trying to come up with a solution.
