(Sophie's POV)
I can't believe I liked Leo and he was actually my husband! I mean, I guess it makes sense since they're the same person, but... It still hurts.
He lied to me.
And now he expects me to come back and pretend like nothing happened? He expects me to deal with the pressure of accidentally hurting someone and staying with my family? Well, he's not going to get what he wants. I'm staying here.
"Foster, wait!" Keefe called behind me, sprinting faster. I sprinted into the lobby of my apartment and tried to close the door to the elevator but Keefe slipped in at the last second.
"Foster, please, just listen-"
"Keefe, I told you to go away." I whispered, my voice cracking. "If you're here it'll just make me want to come back, and... You know I can't do that."
Keefe's gaze softened and he reached for me, his hands intertwining with mine. I didn't fight it because... Well... I missed him. More than I'd admit out loud.
"Foster, love casts out fear. That's something I learned while you were gone." He whispered, bringing his hand up to my chin so my eyes would meet his.
Suddenly, the doors dinged and flew open, and we scrambled away from each other. I glanced at him with a sly grin on my face and cautiously stepped out of the elevator. I slowly guided him to my apartment and closed the door.
"Now, where were we?" Keefe asked, his grin reappearing.
My smile faded. "Keefe, I can't. Something bad will happen."
"You don't know that for sure. Come on, Foster, live a little." Keefe said gently. I opened my mouth to argue but the glint in his eye gave me confidence.
"Maybe just this once." I whispered as he spun me around like people do in those waltzing movies. Then he dipped me down towards the floor and our eyes met.
I gave him a small nod and kissed him.
*****
Just as I was about to break away from the kiss, Keefe yelped and let go, sending me crashing to the floor.
"Keefe!" I exclaimed, laughing as I pretended to be mad. My smile faded when I realized Keefe was staring at his hands. There was a red mark.
He shoved his hands behind his back. "Sorry, did I drop you?"
But I ignored his question. "Did... Did I do that?" I whispered.
"No! I got that a long time ago-"
"Keefe, don't lie to me." I said firmly. Keefe sighed.
"Fine. Your enhancing kind of... Well, it shocked me like lightning." He mumbled. "But it's not that bad!"
"Yes it is! Every time I feel something and hold your hand or touch you I'm probably gonna hurt you! This is why I have to stay away, Keefe. Don't you understand that?" I asked, tears rimming my vision.
"Sophie, I understand that better than anybody. My abilities were acting up a lot when we were teenagers, remember? But that doesn't mean I want to accept it. And I know you don't want to, either." Keefe whispered.
"Well, I'm gonna make myself except the fact that I have to stay away. And I think you need to do that too." I snapped.
Then I shoved him out of my apartment and closed the door.
*Why, Sophie, why????!
Oopsie I gotta go before people attack me in the comments and come for me.
