(Sophie's POV)
I slowly approached the entrance of the dog park, using my phone flashlight to keep me from tripping like an idiot.
I'm surprised this park is still open, but I slowly push the gate open and then close it behind me as I step inside.
Ruffles barks and sprints over to a dark corner of the dog park. Then I realized that Leo was now petting my dog. I gave him a shy wave as Izzy ran over to me. I rubbed behind her ears and called her a good girl before the two dogs went to play with each other. I sat a safe amount of space away from Leo.
"I didn't expect you to come." Leo admitted. "I just... I really need to talk to you."
"Why do you need to talk to me? You barely know me." I mumbled.
"Because..." He sighed. "I just really miss someone right now, and... Harley said you would know what that felt like."
"Oh." I patted my side pocket of my pajama pants. I always have a picture of my family in there in case I get homesick but my photographic memory copies it perfectly and I feel like staring at it forever but instead I say, "Yeah, she's right. I know what it feels like."
"Who do you miss?" Leo whispered.
"My family." I mumbled.
"Oh. Me too. One of my family members in particular." He said.
"Sometimes I wish I could be with them right now." I whispered, not really meaning for him to hear me.
"Where are they?" He asked.
"It's complicated." I replied quietly. It's not like I could tell him about the Lost Cities.
"What's that headband for? Harley said you always wear it." Leo said. My breath caught, and I blew it out, slowly tracing the shape of the headband on my head.
"It's from my best friend." It wasn't technically a lie. "And I wear it to remember him." Okay, that was a lie, but... It's just because otherwise he'd think I'm crazy.
"Oh."
There was a moment of silence between us. Then he scooted closer, his breath warm on my cheeks as he whispered, "Can you show me your family?"
I swallowed hard before I slipped the picture out of my pocket and held it close to my chest. "This might sound weird, but... When I said family, I meant..." I flipped the picture around, and I expected him to be surprised but he actually smiled.
"I know, Foster. I know." He whispered.
The realization clicked in my mind as he reached for me. I yanked my arm away.
"Keefe, you know you're not supposed to follow me." I whispered, brokenhearted but relieved to see him.
He poured a drink into his mouth and within seconds, he was the same blonde haired ice blue eyed boy I had fallen in love with. "Foster, you know I can't stay away from you. I love you too much for that." He said. But I turned my face away.
"Just go away." I whispered. I clipped Ruffles' leash back on and ran out of the dog park.
*Hehe awesome plot twist. I'm so evil.
