Chapter 3: Crushes Part 2

Okay.

Let's call him Eli, since that's the first three letters of his middle name. He's been a classmate of mine since Grade 7, when I first moved to my new school. Eli is a smart guy, a big 180° from Al. He's got the brains, and I'll admit his intelligence is impressive.

The reason why I grew to have a crush on him was that he used to talk all day on Discord, and we would talk about everything and anything, so there was a very easy connection. He'd share what was troubling him, and I'd listen and give him advice. If he was in a low, I'd be there for him through call.

I won't be sharing what he told me all those years ago out of respect, though.

Notice how I didn't say, "I listened to him, and he listened to me."

Yep.

I mean, yes, he did listen when I'd share my struggles, but the only things he would say or react with through text is "lol", "wow", or "okay" or something a bit longer, but the topic would always end up in something related to himself. But when he comes to me to share his burdens, I always have to be there and listen to him without interrupting and use my full attention on him.

But because I still had a crush on him, I didn't say anything. If he wanted to text me, I'd put down everything- my chores, my hobbies, even the time I was using to chat with my mom. No one knew that I had a crush on this guy, and I never made it obvious, however my actions proved that I was mindlessly being led by my emotions for this one boy.

I made sure to hide my emotions well, to make sure no one noticed my feelings for him, unlike the time I made it too obvious for everyone to see during primary school. Then as my crush on him started to die down a bit, something happened.

One day, while I was texting with Eli, it went like this:

Eli: Yezzzzz
Eli: I think I'm deve- nvm nvm
Eli: i was gonna say something but it's best if I don't say it lmao

Sal: Deve?

Eli: Develo

Sal: what's develo
Sal: Developing?

Eli: developing yea

Sal: developing wha

Eli: if u can finish that sentence
Eli: id give you the answer

Sal: you're developing uhhh
Sal: amnesia? no no jk jk
Sal: JK

Eli: BAHAHAHAHAHA

Sal: JK JK JK uh

Eli: try guessin

Sal: You're developing a crush from someone in our class idk lah

Eli: WT🤬 YOU'RE RIGHT HOW

Sal: WHAT WHO OOOOOOHHH

Eli: uh uhhhh

Sal: OHHHHH is it fkm or smthn? Or hmmm

Eli: Ok fine yes i swear don't tell anyone

Yeaaaaaaahhhh let's just hope he never finds this book hahahahahahAHA.....

So yes he started to develop a crush on someone else, and that was when I said to myself, "okay sal, he doesn't like you back, that is fine. There are many more fish in the sea and YOU'RE NOT EVEN 18 YET SO PULL. YOSELF. TOGETHA."

I supported him throughout the period of time he liked this girl, and i forced my feelings down and basically extinguished the fire of feelings in me.

GUESS WHAT HAPPENED THREE MONTHS LATER

Eli: Speaking of which I don't like fkm anymore, I have a new interest

Sal: HEH??? What is up with you liking so many different girls

Eli: Nah bro it's normal

Sal: Who is it this time

Eli: whom*
Eli: It's unexpected
Eli: Yeah cause fkm the more i thought about it her personality is 💩 cause yea she's technically arrogant

Sal: *confused Alastor sticker* uh alright okay

Eli: It doesn't look like it but I've known her for a long time, but just maaaybe its in our class the new interest

Sal: maybe? mkay

Eli: She speaks basically in Indonesian but she's okayish in English

Sal: hmm

Eli: I did say maybe so you can say any other person from the other class

Sal: oh
Sal: Z

Eli: random but yes

Sal: HOW WHAT HAPPENED??

Eli: yeah even idk she's just fun to talk to ig? idk okayish OKAYISH PERSONALITY

Sal: how do you change crushes so fast

Eli: FAST??? YOU CALL THAT FAST??? FAST IS LIKE IN A WEEK

Sal: YEAH BUT STILL

Eli: I LIKED FKM FOR THREE MONTHS

Sal: still it's fast because for example if i like someone i can like them for 3 years before i forget them

Eli: well ig boys are not girls

So that happened and that made me completely say "yeah I don't like this guy anymore" to myself, and we slowly started to chat less and less

Currently the only time we text with each other is when he needs help with mandarin, which I gladly assist but there's no spark now, you know? But honestly, this experience taught me a lot despite hardening me quite a lot too

Lesson 1: Focus on your studies instead of boys and crushes

Lesson 2: Don't share your deepest darkest secrets that easily, especially with a person of the opposite gender

Lesson 3: A relationship must have balance and the couple must give in equal effort. If this doesn't happen even in friendship, then there is no hope for romance, especially in middle school

Lesson 4: Have clear boundaries with the opposite gender and don't sacrifice every second of your time just to pursue a crush that will never like you back

Lesson 5: Stop. Wasting. Time.

Lesson 6: Never disregard your responsibilities just for some crush

Lesson 7: Always respect each other and keep their secrets even if the friendship is strained

And before I end this chapter, the main reason I wanted to share this story is to let you dear readers know beforehand, that if you have a crush you HAVE to make sure he/she treats you right, otherwise the friendship/relationship will only make you feel exhausted and tired.
