Chapter 11 - Steady Growth

(Y/n)'s P.o.V
(Y/n) looked at Chara as he smiled and rolled back onto his bed 'Today has been terrible and yet even so I manage to be happy' (Y/n) thought as he stared at the ceiling, overthinking life 'If only I could prove Chara has gotten better...'
(Y/n) rolled around in his bed and tried to fall asleep, he failed as he got off of his bed and started to walk around. He took a step which caused a loud screech from the floorboard as he looked back at Chara seeing her shift on the mattress.
"Shoot gotta be more quiet" (Y/n) whispered as he opened the door and left entering the hall "Man I wonder how I can get Chara into school... because it's not like I can just let her go, she needs a parent to approve it..."
"Bud!" Joe said enthusiastically from the couch as he looked toward the hall "Come over here!"
(Y/n) walked over to his gramps and looked at him confused about why he was so enthusiastic "Yes Gramps?" he asked as he tilted his head slightly
"Well I have a gift for you!" He said a smile now present on his face "Take a guess on what it is!"
"Well I'm not too sure... Maybe a souvenir from the monsters?" (Y/n) guessed as he put his hand to his chin in thought
"You have two more guesses bud" Joe said his smile still present "After those guesses I'll reveal what it is"
"Alright, hmmm" (Y/n) said still confused "Is it a new backpack?"
"Nope" Joe said with a smile as he smirked lightly "Last one bud"
"Hmmm, a new phone?" (Y/n) said thinking about all the gifts his Gramps could have gotten for him
"you guessed right, I know it isn't your birthday but I know yours broke a while back and this stuff is important now" Joe said as he handed (Y/n) a phone box "Go ahead and open it!"
"Are you sure Gramps?" (Y/n) asked a mix of shock, happiness, and guilt on his face
"Yep, go for it bud" Joe said as he watched the box in (Y/n)'s hand
"Thank you Gramps I appreciate it" (Y/n) said his face now covered with a smile as he slowly opened the box
"I hope you like it, from what I know you're the first human to get it" Joe said as he looked at (Y/n)
(Y/n) looked at Joe now confused about what he meant "Hmm?" (Y/n) hummed as he looked at the phone to see a monster branded phone "Wait it's one of the monsters phones!"
(Y/n) looked at Gramps and smiled at him "Thank you so much!" he said as he took the phone out of the box
"Oh yeah the monster wanted me to warn you that it runs off of magic" Joe said "From what I know your probably one of the few that can use it as well"
"really? I guess that makes sense since magic comes from the monsters" (Y/N) said as he felt the very slow yet continuous pull of magic from him as he turned the phone on "Wow, that's... really weird"
"I know isn't it bud" Gramps said as he looked at (Y/n) a smile still on his face as the phone powered on "Well this technology is new to us so have fun exploring what it can do"
"Got it!" (Y/n) said as he smiled and walked back into his room and lay down on his bed
"No, no, no... not again" Chara said as she tossed and turned on the mattress
"Hmm?" (Y/n) questioned as he looked at her concerned "Are you ok?"
"No I-I'm different now!" She whispered while crying
"Is she having a nightmare?!" (Y/n) said as he rushed to her bedside and pushed her a bit to wake her "Are you okay?"
"I ah, yeah..." Chara said the red glint in her eyes now softened as she looked into his eyes the tears slowly flowing down her face as she looked away
"Chara I'm here if you need someone to talk to..." (Y/n) said as he hugged her "I-I understand if you want to cry, if you feel as if you need to please do..."
Chara stayed silent as she buried her face into (Y/n) her sobs being muffled by (Y/n)'s shirt
(Y/n) looked down at her, he pulled her in a bit closer as he tried to comfort her "I'm always here for you" (Y/n) said as he continued to comfort her

Chara's P.o.V
Chara looked at the ceiling after trying to fall asleep. She turned to her side and got up looking at (Y/n) "Why do I even think I can change... I... I'm not worth his time... but he wants me to try so I might as well..." Chara said as tears silently fell down her face as she sat back down on the mattress
"Thank you (Y/n)... I wouldn't have made any progress without you..." Chara whispered as (Y/n) rolled around in his bed startling Chara
"Shit!" Chara whispered as she lay down on her bed trying to hide the fact that she's awake
(Y/n) continued to twist and turn in his bed as Chara closed her eyes trying to sleep once again, yet it seems it won't come easy this time "Why was I able to easily fall asleep earlier and yet, now, I struggle to even find somewhere comfortable enough for me to sleep" Chara whispered confused
"Chara?" (Y/n) said with a confused yet tired tone as he looked at Chara "Are you still awake?"
"Y-Yea, I wasn't able to fall asleep..." Chara said as she looked up towards (Y/n) a small blush visible on her cheeks
"Well I guess that's fair, would you like to, uh, switch beds?" (Y/n) asked as he continued to look at her his face a showing a barely noticeable red glow "I mean if it's that uncomfortable maybe switching beds would help!"
"A-Are you sure (Y/n)... It's your bed after all..." Chara said her tone happy yet worried "I don't want to bother you after all..."
(Y/n) looked at Chara as he got sat on his bed "Well it isn't too much trouble for me so don't worry" (Y/n) said as he smiled the red glow now more noticeable
"Thank you (Y/n)..." Chara said a smile plastered on her face
(Y/n) got off of his bed and sat down next to Chara's bed "No worries Chara, after all you are my guest" (Y/n) said "Anyways, I hope that having a comfortable bed helps you sleep"
"Same..." Chara said as she got onto (Y/n)'s bed and attempted to fall asleep once again
(Y/n) lay down on the inflatable mattress and looked at the ceiling. As he looked at the ceiling drowsiness overcame him once again and he fell asleep...

In Chara's dream

Chara stands in a field of flowers playing with them eventually seeing Asriel "Asriel!" Chara exclaimed in excitement as she went to grab his hand the world which was so bright falls into darkness.
As Chara falls into darkness she watches her countless genocide runs replay. She screams but nobody came...
She screams once again trying to save herself from her own sins. She closes her eyes "Someone, anyone... please help" Chara whispered her voice hoarse and filled with sorrow.
Chara opens her eyes and sees someone holding their hand out. She reaches for it and grabs ahold of it and it pulls her back into the light.
She stares at the figure that saved her from herself, surprised to see none other than... (Y/n)
"Don't worry Chara I won't let you suffer yet again" (Y/n) said
