Whenever You Need Me

"Oh my gosh!" she exclaimed in between breathes as she carefully dabbed at her glittery eyelids. "That is awesome! I love you so much."

I had picked her up for the Halloween party and had chosen to go as none other than the Grim Reaper, her affectionate nickname for me. I poked her in the ribcage with my scythe. "Did you expect to find Death to come knocking on your door today?"

She held up her hands in mock surrender. "Please, no. I'm still young," she begged as she slid into the passenger seat of my Jetta, one of her fairy wings getting tangled on the door.

"So, how do you want to do this?" I asked. "The Reaper is a taken man, so the kiss of death is out. May I propose heart failure?"

She straightened out the white sequin corset of her costume. "About that...How did you convince the troll to let you pass over the bridge that led to my house?"

Matt wagged his finger at me. "Hey, that's my girlfriend you're talking about. The snarky comments aren't cool. And never mind how. I'm an adult and am allowed to make my own decisions."

She smiled gratefully into the mirror on the visor as she patted body glitter onto her décolletage. "Well, I'm happy you did. I've missed you."

"I'm not stopping at the drive-thru to buy you French fries," I retorted, grinning. "So, quit sucking up."

She laughed, running her fingers through the coils she had curled into her raven locks, the gemstones scattered throughout reflecting the afternoon sun. "Forget it. I take it back. I'll return you to sender. You're actually rather annoying."

Chuckling, I turned on the radio and we spent the rest of the ride singing off-key and mumbling our way through songs that we only knew a handful of the lyrics to. When we arrived at the college dorm building that was hosting the party, I straightened out my black cloak while Addison slicked on another layer of iridescent pink gloss.

She smacked her lips together. "Okay, I'm ready."

"Great. Let's go grab a drink." She followed me over to the bank of elevators and a door on the far left immediately glided open.

"Floor five," she said as we walked inside, prompting me to push the button.

But no sooner did the elevator begin rising did it abruptly stop with a jolt. The lights flickered before dimming and I stared at Addison with wide eyes. "What the hell just happened?"

Frowning, she jabbed at the panel, but her efforts produced no results. "I think we're stuck," she stated.

I dropped the scythe to the floor and began pacing back and forth, panic rising in my chest. "Oh fuck, oh fuck," I muttered.

Addison gawked at me, her mouth agape. "Are you alright?"

I tugged at the collar of my cloak. "I can't breathe," I said, gasping for air. "Are we running out of oxygen?"

I pressed my hands to my mouth, trying not to hyperventilate and use up what little air remained in the space.

"Matt, everything will be fine," she gently soothed. "I'm sure somebody has already been dispatched to us and will arrive shortly. Just relax and-"

"Help!" I screamed, pounding on the doors. "We're trapped! There are people down here that are going to die!"

"Or we can lose our minds and completely freak out," she continued, gesturing at me. "That works too."

"My lungs feel tight!" I cried, bending over, and grasping at my knees.

"Breathe," she instructed, coming over and rubbing my back. "You're safe."
