"Liz don't worry, I'll be home by eight like always and yes, I have my taser." Evelynn says, her bluetooth headphones connecting to her phone that was in the built-in side pocket of her leggings.
The sun was already setting and she'd decided to get a head start on her daily jog, through her neighborhood and into the large park that was located on the outer parts of the subdivision where the forest was. Even though her younger sister always went along, she'd been stuck in a conversation with their parents about some new rules they were deciding to set in regards to her new long-term boyfriend, Quintin.
"Eve, you know I don't like you going places alone." Liz's voice filtered through the phone speaker, the overall tone worried and a bit stressed. "You should have waited for mami and daddy to finish talking to me, I was already dressed and everything."
Evelynn rolls her eyes, releasing a sigh. She just wanted to be alone right now, school had gotten on her nerves and when she showed her mom her progress report, she'd gone off because she got an 80% in English literature. Not a C or an F, but a B-. "Elizabeth, come on, you worry too much about me. Who's the older sister here?"
"You may be older, but we both know you're the one with the sensitive heart." Liz responds seriously, Evelynn could practically see Elizabeth's face right now, her eyebrows furrowed in frustration alongside a firm frown.
"I'll call you the minute I get home, and my location is on so you'll be able to see my every step." Eve sighs, knowing how strong willed Elizabeth was when it came to her being safe, even of that meant they always went out together.
"Don't worry, go spend some time with Q, we both know that's why Mami and Daddy are being extra strict on you, no one's good enough for our Elizabeth." Evelynn laughs, Liz matching her in laughter as they both got the inside joke. No boy was good enough for her, and even if they lasted she could find someone else if she wanted too.
A chuckle is her on the other side of the phone, both girls knowing how Elizabeth was when it came to boys. There was always something to talk about, the most outrageous things. "Don't forget to call me when you get home, Eve. If not I'll hit you up."
"I won't, I love you." Evelynn replies, picking up her pace as she set her watch to record the mileage of her jog.
Even though their parents could be a hassle, Elizabeth was Evelynn's ride or die. They would help each other through thick and thin, both appreciative of each other in their own ways. Eve loved hugs whilst Elizabeth was more quality time, but together nothing could get past them.
"Love you too, bye." When Elizabeth hung up, Eve had her music on low, only one ear bud in so that she could still be conscious about the surrounding area to be safe.
She had her taser, but that didn't feel like enough and she wanted to be careful now that this was one of the nights she'd gone on her own since Liz had started to tag along now. Maybe, she should have brought Memphis along because he was the biggest Rottweiler in the household.
Too late to turn back now.
Instead of stressing, Evelynn releases a sigh, and chooses to focus on the jog ahead of her. She found solace in nightly jogs as they just seemed to give her a break from everything, and when Elizabeth was there there was no doubt she'd have a smile as they held deep conversations with one another.
With her favorite music playing softly in her ears, Eve jogs for a while, the girl not even noticing how dark the night has truly become. The park was dimly lit with lamp posts, but the only other light source that could be found was the full moon shining high above, luminating everything in its light, shadows being cast out and somehow making the park seem particularly eerie. The strangest part was how the white light that was visible started to change, a now red glow being cast down upon her and that's when a distinct crunch could be heard, followed by footsteps.
