Brandon's phone rang as he drove the car. He picked it up still shifting his eyes from the road to his phone.
"Oh, it's mom. Here you answer it." He said handing it to me.
"Hey" I said.
"Hey, Callie. Where's Brandon?"
"Oh he's driving here" I said putting it on loud speaker.
"Hey mom" Brandon said.
"Hey B, so how's the trip going?"
"Uh, it's good." I said.
That's good. Haha. So you guys having fun?"
"Yeah" "yes" we both said.
"We're missing ya both back home."
"Yeah we miss you too" he said.
"Oh, Lena is here." The phone ruffled and Lena spoke.
"Brandon? Callie?"
"Hey." "Yeah"
"How are you?"
"We're good."
"Have you been eating good? And water? I hear it's hot out there."
"Yeah. We just ate."
Brandon looked over at me and made an annoyed look. I smiled.
"Ok well I'll let you go."
"Ok"
"Ok. Drive safe. Love you."
"Bye"
"Bye"
I clicked end and placed the phone back down.
"Why are parents so fussy?" He said.
"You know I have no idea"
"Was your mom ever like that?" He asked looking over.
I looked down biting my lip.
"I'm sorry I shouldn't have asked"
"Oh no it's fine. I guess...she was pretty protective over me and Jude. But um, no she was cool."
"What was she like? Your mom?"
"Um... She was very smart, very beautiful..."
"A lot like you." He said softly looking out the window then over at me.
I looked at him. I didn't know what to say.
"She was good, a good lady."
There was silence again but it was shortly cut off by Brandon's phone again.
"Oh,it's Lou" he said picking it up and wedging it under his ear on his shoulder.
"Hey" he said. I looked down.
It hurt listening as he talked to his girl. I use to be his girl. That's why it hurt.
"Callie and I are on a road trip" he said with a little laugh.
"Mexico. " he said. I presumed she asked where we were going.
"Yeah. Just us."
His face seemed annoyed.
"No....yes.......ok......bye...bye" he put the phone down and I could see the anger on his face.
"What's wrong?"
"She's pissed"
"Why?"
"Because we are on a road trip together." His voice seemed frustrated.
"And?"
"Callie, we are together in the middle of nowhere."
"Yeah I understand, but why is she mad?"
"I just guess she's jealous"
"Did you tell her about us?"
"No, she found out herself."
"How?"
"She found the draft I wrote of outlaws"
"How did she get me out of that?"
"Because, because it wasn't called outlaws when I wrote it...it was called 'callies song'"
He looked at me. Mouth parted and eyes sad. I had to look away. It hurt to much looking at him. I couldn't feel that way I did before. I wasn't aloud to. I was with the fosters. They were my family. Brandon was my brother. How come it was so hard for me to understand.
