I sat staring at the crack in the floor board.
I was almost seventeen. I never thought I would get there, happily and healthy. I was one of the lucky ones. The foster system was harsh. And yet I had survived it.
I had to celebrate. I needed to celebrate.
I gazed cross to the plastic card on my bed side table. My licence.
A smile spread across my face. Road trip.
I discussed my plans with Stef and Lena and with hesitation they let me go. But on one condition. Brandon had to come.
I rushed into his room and saw him at his piano. I liked seeing that sight. Him just sitting there, tapping at the keys with emotion that I cut into me.
When he heard me he turned around.
"Hey." I began leaning against the door frame.
"Hey" he replied with his smile that once warned my heart.
There was a silence and he spoke again. "What's up?"
"Um, do you wanna go to Mexico?"
He glared at me. Like I was crazy.
"Uh..." He laughed.
"Oh, come on. We're going to be all grown up and at college next year, we need to live a little"
"Why are you going to Mexico?" He asked still confused.
"Just for fun. And besides Stef and Lena said I couldn't go... If you didn't come."
He looked at me. "Um"
"Oh come on Brandon." I smiled. "Live a little."
I could see him smile. "Sure, why not"
I laughed. "Ok then"
"Ok. Let's go." He laughed.
