When Carl got back from the lineup, his girlfriend was waiting for him at home. He had been gone for longer than expected and y/n couldn't help but pace up and down nervously. When the front door opened, she ran to go and see who it was

There, infront of the door was Carl, his bandage around his head, covering his eye and his face full of grief. It was clear that something had gone wrong

Instead of asking question, y/n sighed, running up to him and embracing him in a warm hug. That was the moment Carl realised how scared he was. It brought him back to reality as he burst into tears, clinging onto his girlfriend who he believed be would never see again. They have been friends since the beginning, with her parents being one of the first to die, lori and Rick took care of y/n. At that time, she grew close with Carl and by the time they arrived at the prison, the two had begun dating.

Her hands ran through his dirty hair as she kissed his cheek

"It's OK, you're home and you're safe." Y/n wanted to ask about everybody else, about the people she had grown to call family. About Rick, the man who cared for her when she had no family to protect her. She wanted to know about Maggie who sang to the girl every night after she began having nightmares in the church. She wanted to know about Abraham who once spent an entire day teaching her all the swear words he knew until michonne realised and quickly stopped him. Or Glenn, who taught her how to drive a car because he was the only one who didn't get nervous when she was behind the wheel. She wanted to ask, but thought now wasn't the time. Carl was obviously in shock and he just needed to realise that he was safe first.

"Ill run you a bath sweetie," she said, kissing Carl's lips softly before they departed. They both went upstairs as y/n switched on the water and Carl went into their bedroom

Next to the bed, in a crib, was Elodie Grimes. Being just a few weeks old, the only facial expressions she could pull was that of a wrinkly old man. But the last time Carl said that out loud, y/n had clipped him round the ear and told him to watch his tongue.

Elodie wasn't Carl's by blood. But he was there for y/n after she struggled mentally and physically being pregnant from an event that was not consensual. He was her father, and he treated her like his own blood

"Oh my baby girl," Carl whispered, lifting elodie up out of her crib and holding her against his chest. She curled up into a ball in his hands, proving to be incredibly fragile, so much so that Carl was nervous everytime he held her

"Baths ready sweetie," y/n said quietly, not wanting to make him jump. He went into the bathroom and undressed, getting into the bath with elodie still against his chest. Y/n sat next to the bath and began cleaning Carl's hair

"She feels weightless," he said in amazement as elodie snored against him

"She loves you"

"She's too young to love," he scoffed

"You're starting to sound like your dad. Trust me, she can love. She just doesn't know what love is. Look at her, she feels safe with you. You're a good daddy," y/n explained, kissing his head as she began to remove his bandage. Carl's mood seems to drop again as y/n spoke. He started thinking about Glenn. About how he'll never get to be a daddy, about how it was robbed from him when everybody knows that Glenn would've been the best father

"Carl, everybody made it home...right?" Y/n asked, noticing his silence. Slowly, her shook his head before looking up at her.

"When we were taking Maggie to the hilltop, the saviours managed to corner us"

"But we killed them"

"That was just an outpost. There was atleast 70 men surrounding us, maybe more. And that wasn't even all of them. We met the guy in charge, negan. He lined us all up and chose who would die. First, he beat Abraham to death, and then Glenn too. He took daryl and none of us could do anything to stop him. We all just sat there agreeing to everything he said," Carl was crying again, as was y/n. She had her head in her hands as Carl stroked her hair, letting her lean on his shoulder

"So...what's happening now? Has Rick said we're going to war?"

"We can't. They have daryl and hundreds of men. He has an army. My dad has agreed to gather for them. Theyll come here and take half of everything we've got. We're playing by their rules now," he explained, using the back of his thumb to wipe her tears away

Once Carl was out of the bath and dried off, he fell asleep in the bed. Y/n was downstairs, trying to keep elodie quiet so she wouldn't wake him but it was difficult when even y/n couldn't stop crying. When the door opened, and y/n saw Rick looking defeated, her heart broke

"Enid is looking after Judith next door. I know you asked me to but she cried everytime elodie cried and it wasn't fair on either of them," she explained

"No no. Its fine. Thank you," he said, his voice hoarse and his eyes blank

"Rick, I know you and I know that you have a tenancy to blame yourself when things go wrong. But don't. There are bad people in this world and they're the ones to blame. Not you."

Rick walked over and took elodie in his arms, kissing her head before pulling y/n in for a hug as she wrapped her arms around his waist

"Still can't believe I'm a grandpa," he said with a chuckle

"Just look in the mirror and count the grey hairs. Then you'll believe it," she smiled up at him as he rolled his eyes. As Rick got into the shower, y/n went into her room that she shared with Carl. He was still asleep so quietly, she got into bed next to him with elodie in the middle as they faced eachother

"Hi"

"Sorry. Didn't mean to wake you," she whispered

"It's alright. Its a nice way to wake up," as he said that, a ghastly smell filled the air and elodie pulled a funny face

"Never mind. It's a vile way to wake up," he chuckled as they both gagged, standing up from the bed and glaring down at their daughter

"Babies are gross," Carl whispered to himself

"I just know that she's laughing at us right now," y/n sighed. They both looked at eachother and smiled before arguing about who's turn it is to change their daughter.
